nicolegriffin
Hi there everybody this is my first time on here. I wonder if anybody can help me. For about 2-3 weeks now one of my hens (lucky) is laying with no shell. We made the mistake by adding the grit to the feed. One of my friends has now told us to put it in another tray at the side of the feed. We have done this and for a week we still have the egg with no shell. Lucky seems ok she is not ill, she is eating and drinking ok running around the garden with the other 2 hens Daisy and Lottie, but still no shell HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Egluntyne
Why not try her with a calcium supplement such as limestone flour added to her pellets.....anout a dessert spoonful per grub, or a liquid calcium and vitamin D supplement, such as Zolcal D. Limit the amount of extras that she gets too, so that she eats up hr pellets. That should make a difference.
Plum
Hello welcome, I've not had no shell, but at times very little shell and I've found Egluntine's advice does work. I mix limestone flour with codliver oil for vit d and some porridge oats at tea time. On the days I'm home too late to give it them I find next morning a very thin crumbled shell on the egg. I've tried crumbling egg shell and putting it with feed as well. Otherwise they have lovely shells now. I hope it works for her. When I put things in with the feed they just flicked the pellets out of the grub to get what they want so given up with that except garlic powder So keep mixed grit and shell in a seperate pot. The egg this morning was a big yolk with a see through sack round it with this strange pink stuff that looked like an human ear attached. Thanks Daisy Lucky Lottie
