Raina
Not sure if in right section Hi all, Can chooks have toys? I know small birds/parrots can but I'm not sure about hens We got some scaly leg/face lotion off eBay and it came with a disk with some photos of food on (corn,Meal worms, ect. ) so that got me thinking of toys. If they can, we have a couple of old bird mirrors (will they be OK? have been disinfected with baby sterilizer (sp?)) Also what type of home made toys/treats can they have? Thanks in advance, Raina
fluffyknickers
Somebody suggested hanging old cds from the top of the run - I may try this. Mine have a pecking block hanging in there. I sometimes give Millet. Have a food ball from Omlet. I also have a little yellow ball that corn comes out of if they knock it. This isnt all at once! The pecking block is there all the time though. Raina
Somebody suggested hanging old cds from the top of the run - I may try this. I might use my mums DVDs We bought our rats some coconut halves that had fruit paste in them, we also added some dried meal worms to it, would that be OK for them(hens)? (as a treat)
fluffyknickers
You would need to check the ingredients of the stuff in the coconut as they cant have fat and salt and other things. If it has an ingredient list put it on here and people will say if its safe or not. I would check with your mum first Something I have done with corn and you can do with mealworms is to entertain the chickens with a hide and seek using he corn - around the garden I put some corn all in nooks and crannys and on th childrens slide etc and they ran round finding it!!! The little balls from pet shops are great entertainment too as my two really get it and knock it and kick it to make the food tumble out but the hasnt a clue and just waits for them to do the hard work! If you have an old tree stump or big piece of wood it would be fun to drill holes in it and hide food in the holes. Michelle

ted
I have 2 cds back to back so that it is a double sided mirror. Also hang up a carrot or cabbage leaves. They have a treat ball but they are a bit dim or small to use it... Last week I tried a little bell of seeds (only 60p) from pet shop which they enjoyed pecking at. Cinnamon
My hens best 'toy' is a big log, which has nice strong twigs poking out, which I implas corn cobs or cucumbers on to. Also they love the corn or cabbage hanging from a chain from the top of their pen. I have a hook with a screw on the end which I screw into the end of the veggie, & they spend hours trying to eat it, while it swings about
