medication into chook. A veterinary persons explanation

Recommended Posts

Now I am dab hand at liquid baytriil, can even pop a pill now, but have got Synulux & Nystatin(also some electolyts & appitite stimulant to add to 4 pts water daily. :(

My silly chook only occasionally drinks. and rarely from her glug or bowl.

Should I crate her & risk her being miserable & hope she drinks it or are there better ways.

The dose for Synulix is 1ml Nystatin 2ml.

Also if trying to get more fluid than normal by syringe just how easy or hard is it to squirt it into the lungs?

I normaly drip a few drops at a time, letting the chook swallow herself, but only get 2.3 mls a a time this way. Also is it more or less likely to get it wrong when they fight you?

Oh & if you get it wrong is it obvious, like do they keel over

You never realise how much you DON@T now until you need to know!

sorry I was not clearer. I was told to put it ALL in the 4pints, but I can't see how I could be sure she got the dose needed of either the nystatin or synulox that will kill of the bacteria. I would feel much happier just giving it straight down the beak & leaving the electrolytes & appetite stimulant (thaty when she is up like now, she doesn't need) in the wayer. what she does need is a drinking stimulant! although she is getting better at that provided her water is "un naturalle"!

Please check with the vet - I think the dose is in the water and what she drinks she drinks and what is left at the end of each day is disposed of and a new lot made up for the next day. i dont think you are meant to get her to drink 4 pints. It will be the correct dose for her as 1ml of Synulox oral suspension is a lot for 1 chicken over the throat I think.

Would the lab be able to give you advice on this? Otherwise work out what fluid a chicken would normally drink and calculate dose from the 4 pint ratio and give her that amount by syringe in divided doses. :? It must be better than doing nothing if she's not drinking except what you give her? :?

It's put in water I guess so that her gut will be exposed to it constantly (if she was drinking).

Still hope it works :D

Baytril is different as its usually a suspension too but is licenced I think for poultry whereas the others are off licence under the cascade system. Maybe it is 1ml dose of Synulox but 4 pints is a heck of an amount to give a chicken

Hope she is better soon - I have one which seems a bit off colour last couple of days trying wormer first but not sure what is wrong - she is eating but is hunched up and just not 100%

I had to make the synulox into a suspension too. i did ask Retfords omthe phone if I could give it direct, & she said yes follow the instructions? which was 4pints!

HOWEVER

Spoken to an EXPERT NOW!!!!!!

this is the science.

No reason at all once made into it's suspension to give directly.

HOWEVER as Susan? suggested (Sorry if wrong person) if given in one dose inevetably some is passed out straight away, given in smaller doses it gets longer to do it's job.. (over simplification of the explanation.

suggested 4 doses as that is getting 0.25mls each dose into her with extra water as she's not a good drinker & also some separately with the electrolytes in. Also says fine to get the electrolytes into her in her wet mash as I have been.

Also possible source of bacteria from the fieldmice that frequent the run.

was also saying about the over use of Baytril (in general) causing a lot of resistant bacteria.

what we were discussing is how a "normal" animal would aquire natural immunity as they were growing up but my 3 and all the other exbats get a bit of assult on their immune systems.

Does anyone know if they are routinely given antibiotics in their food or ater in ther hell holes?

Glad you have an explanation now - its quite difficult with these chooks as they are different from cats and dogs and the dosage etc. Hope she is feeling better soon - sorry dont think ex batts would be given baytril routinely for the egg withdrawals etc but not an expert at all - someone will come along soon I am sure
