BeckyBoo
Sorry my dear, but if he's only 9 weeks old, and comparing him to the other white hen, I think you've got a boy there. Will the breeder take him back or are you able to keep him? BeckyBoo

BeckyBoo She said in the eventuallity that he is a boy give her a phone and i can take him back and swap him but i too think he is a definite boy last thing i need is more hens than i can handle or a cock crowing all day and night lol It isn't close though it took ages to get there and my brother had to drive me in a big plumbers van lol hope he manages to take me out again then! There is NO WAY I CAN KEEP HIM I have neighbours either side i live in a town
Egluntyne
It looks older than 9 weeks old, male or female, to me I'm afraid. Obviously a clerical error somewhere. Are the hackle feathers pointy or rounded at the ends? The legs look boyish, the tail feathers and saddle feathers aren't very clear. Could you post another sideways on photo showing them? I will have a proper look tmrw morning and take more photos but i am thinking its a boy she said when i was collecting them it was difficult to sex them at that age and if he turns out to be a boy i can take him back and swapsy for another which i might have to take her up on
Ygerna
If you bought them as POL, they its possible that s/he is 19 weeks, not 9. POL is usually between 16 and 18 weeks (or so I have been lead the believe). 9 weeks is too young to be a POL, so, it could be that she is indeed a she and is coming into lay. One of my girls seemed to grow a nice big red comb overnight and laid about a week later.

RosemarysBaby
The lady sent me a pic of one of her hens which lays and she has quite a huge comb so just gonna have a wait and see the worst that happens is i have to take the poor baby back if it wasn't for my ghastly neighbours at one side who would most definitely complain i wouldn't mind a whole yard covered in chickens cocks or otherwise but council might mind too lol Now if only i could win a vast amount on the lottery then i would be out buying acres of land and have loads free ranging pure bliss and a couple goats hehe oooh and ducks they are luvvly

I thought the cockrels stuck out like a sore thumb(the way they walk, bags of personality), even though they were young, 12 weeks, but reading this site is making me worry about the sex of mine, they haven't layed yet or crowed either but the lady did say that their first egg is expected mid april. fingers crossed for you

K this might take up some room not sure what size the pix will be or how helpful they kept fluttering away from me lol the one is question has yellow leg band "My OPHELIA" unfortunate sod if he is a boy being named OPHELIA
chelsea
I am sure he's a boy...sorry. The 2nd from last pic above shows a very large comb & tail. very handsome and very pristinely white too!
Egluntyne
I'm pretty sure that it is a cockerel too, especially if the age is right. The tail and the face furniture are boyish. The only doubts I have are the stance and the legs. Neither are very blokeish.
RosemarysBaby
Ophelia and Kelda faced off a few times today and ophelia stood upright rather cockish looking but i have no idea really although been reading up and whitestars amongst other leghorns have large floppy combs as hens aswell just the fact this one is so much bigger at this stage. RosemarysBaby
Looks like i might have to say goodbye to this one then I'll keep a hold of him/her til nearer pol then i will know for sure problem is she is unlikely to have any more whitestars so probably get another hy-line then i gotta do the whole integration thing again maybe i should just take him back and get refund i have heard it's better to integrate 2 rather than 1 at a time oh i dunno
smithy36
I am bucking the trend here... i think she is a girl...but i think 19 weeks not 9?! Have you doubled checked the age? I have a white star, and she grew the comb & wattles really quickly, and they are big - also a white star has an upright tail too... she looks like mine! I would have thought that you would have noticed the different noises too if it were a boy! Finally they are a small breed, dainty - so will be smaller than the others. Good luck... Janty
I'd say bot if it really is the same age as the others. When we had the chicks, it was obvious (even if I was in denial ) that Chipolata was different to the others..larger comb, etc.

I have their exact hatch date from the breeder so they are 11 weeks and 2 days old today. There is a definite size difference in the two but still just holding out hoping it's a she. I am not sure what noises the boys make at a young age or indeed atall apart from the obvious crowing. At the moment they still make a very quite peeping noise it is almost inaudible to human ears it is soooooo quiet. This is the size difference as you can see it is quite immense for 2 chicks of the same batch. Then again I am no expert lol but it looks big to me. Maybe she is just tall for her age
