Cyber Chook
I discovered when I was in Spain at the weekend, and needed medical treatment, that my EHIC (the old E111) card had expired. Luckily the sensible Spanish were fine about it and didn't kick up a fuss, but I'm going to renew it now and everyone else's in the family, as we got them at the same time. They only last 2 years. The new ones last for 5 years, apparently. So anyway, you might want to check and make sure yours is in date still - it's in small print so it's easily missed (at least that's what I told myself). You can renew here: http://www.nhs.uk/nhsengland/Healthcareabroad/pages/Healthcareabroad.aspx

Ain't Nobody Here
We used my son's card last summer in Italy when he came off his bike and broke his collarbone . It was brilliant - we showed it to the ambulance crew and didn't have to complete any paperwork at all. Good tip to check it's still valid though! (Hope you weren't too ill ?) Ain't Nobody Here
Tooth extraction pain Ooh, horrible . I had that after a wisdom tooth was taken out (also on holiday but in Ireland!)
Christian
Thanks for the reminder. When I am away with work they pay for medical costs, but you always forget about private cover. Just checked and I am 'valid' until 2010, but have book marked the link for renewal
Phonix
hi ive had an E111 in the past but have no idea where it is - can i still get the new thing? When i looked you could either apply if you'd never had one or renew if you had but ive lost the old style one that I had!?! any ideas what i should do?! x
Cyber Chook
Stacey, I should imagine you can just apply as if you never had one, and they'll either send you a new EHIC card or tell you what to do if not. I expect lots of people will be in the same position as you. Have you clicked on the link I put in my posting? I think that's probably your best bet.
