MadMitch
I often have an egg waiting for me in the morning. Sometimes when I go to lock them up at night one of them will be in the nest box.

Barkisland
In my poultry book (Keeping poultry, Victoria Roberts) it says "In total it takes 25 hours to lay an egg. This explains why hens do not lay every day, as the hen will ovulate 30 minutes after laying. If it is dark when this happens, she then misses producing an egg the next day. The hybrid hens produce eggs after a slightly shorter time, hence they lay on consecutive days for longer". So, it seems they lay a bit later every day until they lay close to dusk, then they miss a day? It seems to be the case with mine.
splodge88
One of my hens seems to definetly follow the pattern of getting later each day...not sure about the other 2 though.
