........My hen ? Might be crowing..?

Recommended Posts

We have had suspicions our she might be a he but today our he/she started throwing head up and mouth gaping wide i am hoping to god it isn't gape worm i was quite alarmed there is no sound but then again he is only 10 weeks old and he hardly makes a peep when he tries normally it looked like it might be practising to crow i have a video but no idea how to put it up on here, any help appreciated. I bought him on 4th april i wormed them on 7th, 8th and 9th as it's a 3 day a month worming programme so i would of assumed it wouldn't be the worms but eeeek freaking out!!!

one of mine did that whole crowing with no noise thing but it was fine. Maybe just a bit of indigestion. If it continues maybe check the crop?? Is she still eating and drinking ok???

She seems to be the first to the water and feeder when they run out of coop in morning and picks around the garden although seems to sit down alot to sunbathe. I have been ill in bed a few days so my daughters have had to take over duties they said they have seen another opening its beak a bit i have ordered flubanvet or whatever it is called which is supposed to be effective on gape worms if it is that. apparently the verm-x although costs a dang fortune doesn't work.

Don't forget that the dose for gapeworm is double the normal dose, and strictly speaking should only be given with the permission of a vet.

If they have gapeworm, not only do they stretch their necks to try to shift the parasite, they also cough in an effort to expel the worm, and breathe through open beaks. They may also have a rattly chest.

Sometimes you can see the red worm if you shine a torch down the hens throat.

I definitely need to check them over problem is with me being sick i can't really go near them just now can't get kids to do it! haven't noticed any coughing but sometimes opens beak slightly ajar whilst sitting. I don't know how quickly it takes to get gape worm gonna check out that link.

Well after reading the link TED posted it doesn't truly sound like gapeworm apart from the fright of the gaping she did, Ophelia is eating and drinking and pecks and scratches around the garden fine i have noticed her closing her eyes whilst lying down i assume she was just having a rest and odd gape while she is lying down too. I will keep an eye on her hopefully in a few days i will be well enough to go out and get proper look. I watched a vid of a young roo learning to crow and there was noise and he didn't truly open his mouth wide either.

Hi there, I was just reading back you're posts there to see where you got the chooks......If it had been a certain supplier quite close to you I wouldn't have been at all surprised.....all he seems to sell are old (claiming they're point of lay) and sick birds. I got a couple of chooks from him when I started out.....worms, mycoplasma etc. ...........anyway one to avoid, I'm sure you know who I mean.

As far as you're chooks go definitely worth dosing them all with Flubenvet anyway. Mine often stand and stretch their neck after they've been doubled over preening their tummies.....it does look similar to when they have gape.

I haven't seen her doing it for a few days but have noticed some of the bigger ones doing some slight open beakedness (think i made up a word) not quite sure what to make of it still waiting on flubenvet to arrive but will carefully read instructions before i give them it.

Hoping it has been more of a preening spasm on the wide gape, i still think it's a boy lol time will tell lol

ooh and they all attacked the spring greens i put in today for them to eat and they love bread rolls

This is from your link

The worms are probably Ascaridia galli, they don't cause much harm to the birds unless they are present in large numbers. It is not unkown for them to enter the reproductive tract from the digestive tract via the vent and be found inside an egg

UGGHHHH :vom::vom::vom::vom::vom:

Can you just imagine that?

I'm going to worm my lot now .......... YUCK YUCK

Trying hard not to imagine that actually lol Mine haven't laid their first egg yet! but already putting me off ewww lol

Only just got mine in the eglu last night had them in a wooden coop i bought because i was promised silkies which turned out to be very manky lousy and wormy i didn't even let them out their carriers before returning them again and got refund so doubt they got it from those ones Still uncertain if it is worms just waiting on the wormer to arrive our verm-x is apparently useless which i am ticked off about it cost a fortune for a big tub and should of lasted over a year :( I have only had them 11 days now and washed the coop 5 times already so definitely keeping it clean put them in eglu last night and cleaned it fully this morning also have to say didn't follow the video i watched for it lol was more dredging thru sludgy poo and yuk not a simple s"Ooops, word censored!"e off lol

Did you get your chooks from Deanbank? I just found their site a few weeks ago.......think they must be quite new as I'm always searching for suppliers to tell people about when i don't have any for sale. Their place looks amazing.....and you can go and help with the lambing and the piggies :D

Their Poultry Keeping Courses are 50 quid though....I do it for a bottle of wine these days

Yeah I got mine from Deanbank, Pauline and Paddy are the owners took us a while to find we ended up taking wrong turning up a tractor trail just across the road lol nightmare journey coz my son decided it was great opportunity to vomit the 50 minute journey there and back and over me and my brothers van lol That aside Pauline is very helpful and has put up with my million emails and telephone calls very patient lady lol I wanted to go on one of the courses (but i have no car :( ) she really knows what she is doing she can pick up a chicken in an instant where as i am still running away when they take a running charge at me lol but yeah her place looked clean and well looked after. She showed me how to clip their wings before i left aswell my visit was abrupt due to my sons sudden illness but they are very nice.

A bottle of wine huh???? wonder if i can talk my cousin into a lift to yours
