kerrie
Hello with the weather becoming warmer I am thinking about securing the run on a night time but leaving the door to the eglu open-but I have a question. We usually bring the glug and grub in when we put the girls to bed and then put them put the next morning before we open the door to the eglu-(I think I'd get trampled with them running at me holding the food if I didn't ). I don't want to attract rats but want to make sure the girls are comfortable-do I leave the grub and glug out for them or do I bring it in as usual and put it out again in the morning? Just as a quick question while I think of it-the girls do eat more when they are laying don't they? Thanks Kerrie x
Chook n Boo Mum
Hi Kerrie, I've just started leaving the doors open on my cubes & eglu as they are in a very secure WIR. I leave the grubs and glugs out all night, as I think the noise could be worse if they couldn't get food when they get up, than it was when they couldn't get up when they wanted to! When I get up I take them several bowls of mash porridge, especially of it's been a chilly night. I've only been leaving them open for a week, & so far I've only been woken up at 620 on one occasion, which was due to the laying chorus being started early. My Orpies don't have an individual laying cry - they all do it...for each one who lays...and not just the Orpies now either, every time anyone lays & make a slight utterance to announce the fact & the Orpies all start up!!! Minxes!! Sha x
Bassett
Hi Kerrie, I never shut the eglu door, even in the winter it's open as I don't like to think of them locked in, and they are in a sheltered position in the garden. They are in a large WIR. Usually I leave the food and water out so they don't create too much noise first thing in the morning, but recently we had some undesirable visitors , so I've been removing the food and putting back in their run as soon as I wake up in the morning, and they haven't created any noise at all. I'm always worried that I might forget to put their food out, so I leave notes for myself all over the house. Good Luck.
kerrie
I don't have a walk in run-just the run that you get with the eglu from Omlet-not sure if that makes a difference or not? Thanks Kerrie x
Chook n Boo Mum
Until tonight the batties were in the eglu run (with extension), & I left the food out in there too - not a lot, I'll grant you, just enough to give them a snack when they got up! Redwing
I leave my Eglu door open nearly all the time, when I was using the Eglu run I didn't always take the food in but when I did the girls seemed happy enough to wait for their food in the morning provided I was not too late getting it to them they scratched around anyway looking for food in the run bedding - that kept them occupied
Chook n Boo Mum
A friend throws a handful of corn into the dustbath to keep his 2 bantams busy until he gets out with their feeders... They are in an eglu & run. Sha x
