kirbyn
Hi I have two chickens and one of then has lost her feathers between her legs on her under belly, i have been reading about red mites and moulting. As only one has lost any I'm assuming that she is moulting , is it normal for her belly to go red when this happens ? Any cooments / suggestion would be a great help. Thank you Neil
Egluntyne
is it normal for her belly to go red when this happens It is. I have three girls who are doing exactly this at the moment. They are beginning to feather up a bit now. It looks quite alarming though.

Peachy77
just giving my three a check over tonight, and they all have lost a little on the front of the neck, and under there tummys, but arent red. So am also assuming its their 1st moult. They are quite healthy otherwise. Its a bit worrying though the 1st time isnt it.
The Dogmother
I find that most of my hens lose some tummy feathers in the warmer months, more so if they are broody.

jak
One of ours has lost her feathers on her head and has lost them on her belly - plus her belly is bright red. Have just put some red mite powder on her - her belly looks sore because of the redness!!
Redwing
I read somewhere that when hens have exposed skin it does go very red, its not sunburn or soreness (unless is IS sore if you see what I mean) I think its a chemical reaction or something
The Dogmother
You're right, Redwing, it does always go red although I've never been told why. I suspect that it's beacuse all that delicate skin doesn't have any feathers to protect it. A couple of mine get bald tummies in the summer and I just slap some Johnsons tea tree cream on when I can grab them.
jak
So with my girl's head and belly, it could just be moulting??
