cluckbok
Crouching is when they squat down towards the floor whilst standing and they tilt both their wings on either side and they freeze on the spot for you to stroke them or pick them up. Crouching normally indicates that laying is imminient. It took just over a week for Matilda to come back into lay again after she crouched. Sometimes they will crouch for you when you go to stroke them or even if you just walk past them.
cluckbok
I'd say you've probably got a little while yet before you get eggs, it'll go quick though, their combs start to redden up aswell as the crouching, so look out for the signs.
Guest
Thanks I have been watching the combs and the speckeldy is the reddest with one of the omlet not far behind the others are very low combs..no crouching spotted..I think the speckledy is hormonal v flighty/nervy thing..wasnt expecting the speckledy to be like that..the bluebell who i was expecting is very matronly! and friendly lookout. indie
drcara
Emily, our white sussex has started crouching to our 2 dogs and she crouched to a spade earlier as I was digging!

cluckbok
Our Speckledy is the nervous one too, runs off when you try to get her, but she does come running over with the others when called.
carrie
Its one of those things that when they do it you will know what crouching is. It looks very odd, some of my hens crouch more daintily than the others who are not very dignified. I'm not sure this has helped you though
piptiddlepip
Our Maggie is an utterly loose woman and will crouch if you even look at her sometimes, whereas Gytha, who lays huge eggs every day usually, has never crouched and won't let us pick her up. They're all different.

Ain't Nobody Here
It's usually within a week of crouching so fingers crossed .
