fluffyknickers
Flies are getting round the purple cube - could be a mix of loving the colour purple and also their poo (I do clean them out but obviously cant pick up every poo). So want to get it sorted and from reading on here it seems citronella best option. So where do I get it (online pref), what do I do with it eg dilute and spritz about or leave somewhere etcetc. Thank you as always Michelle
Raina
I've had flies hanging around/landing on my eglu too, even before we got the chooks You could always try eBay?
Falkor
I purchase some Citrolnella, tea tree and Eucalptus (sp?) from ebay a few days ago to help with the flies that are lingering around my compost bin. Quite reasonable too! Will PM you
JB09
Hi, I got mine from ebay, was really cheap. I am planning to dilute with water and put in a spray bottle and give the run a daily spray! I HATE flies! JB
Phosphorus
Try hanging up some flytraps - they smell a bit wiffy when you get close to them but they do do the job.
Charlottechicken
Someone recommended these folk to me about two years ago, and my bottle is just running out. It looks like it is on offer again, so I will be stocking up!
helsbels
hi charlottechicken - great link - have just bought some its something i've been meaning to get for ages. do you just dilute it in water and what ratio oil to water do you use ? i thought i'd put it in a little gardening spray bottle and just have it handy to blitz the henhouse and run
Charlottechicken
I don't dilute it, I just put drops into the poo tray, because I line that with newspaper, and a couple of drops on the bars if they are wood ones, I concentrate on the doorway, hoping to put flies off there I put around a dozen drops in every time I clean them out, I don't get flies in the Eglu and that bottle has lasted me two years
kitchens
We had a flytrap last year and it was the most disgusting smelling thing i've ever come across In the end we could not work out if it was actually attracting flies. Personally I would not go for one of these again.
Guest
Hi Today I saw big bottles(2 litre) of citronella in my local horse shop..so am sure u will get some in a place like that not sure of cost though
4Clucks-minusOne
Mine was a £1 from a smelly candle/ incense type shop. I also got Lavender and Eucalyptus. I put a few drops of each in a spray bottle with water and just spray it around the run and in the eglu. I'm sure the Lavender is making them sleep later. doodles
I love the idea of lavender making them all relaxed and sleeping later zzz zzz zzz! Once I get my new run built, I will put pots of lavendar around the outside. I noticed quite a few flies around last week so I now regularly use a few sprays of diluted citronella in and around the eglu and it seems to have done the trick Doodles
BarbaraJ
i used citronella last year and added eucolyptus and lavender to it yesterday. i spray some diluted with water on the cube trays and hung a j-cloth that i'd sprayed from the roof of the WIR. i also have a http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=350170948789 which works well though i shoved hubby higher in the tree to hang it so he didn't keep bumping his head on it like last year. oh and it stinks when you take it down but i can't smell it when nearby unless right under it but worth the pong as it was full of flies last year
Lewis
I have slabs around the WIR, so I put a bit on those, and I also have half a teracotta pot which I put some on, which soaks it up and holds the smell. If you have a wooden house (I do), I put a bit in the lid of the bottle, and throw it on the house so that the wood absorbs the citronella. Our citronella is in a big plastic bottle and from B&Q, meant for those candles.
fluffyknickers
Thank everyone. Was in town on saturday and flies really getting me down (and worried that hubby will say its the chickens!) so went to Boots and bought a bottle of Citronella - they had a 3 for two offer on so also bought some tea tree and a Badgers Balm. I have put a few drops on an old baby bib and wedged in the cube and also tied a piece of fabric to the washing line with some one. I forgot to get a spray bottle and only have some I need for work so will buy a new one and dilute some citronella and tea tree in the water and spray it around - make it more cost affective. I actually hate the smell of the citronella so dont blame the flies for not liking it too! Michelle
