mand and family
Hi everyone My question is about scaly leg mites on silkies/sultan hens.( I think that is what they were. they had feathers on their legs and heads but with red faces not black) I've just visited my local park with the family and we had a look at the aivary there. Two of their chickens looked like they had really bad scaly leg mites and their nails were long and curly aswell. Does anyone have any pictures of them ? so I can check if I'm right I'm not an expert but the cock bird looked a little lame aswell. He wouldn't put his weight on his right leg. I was really mad they are supposed to be experts and be able to look after them. I complained to the man there and he said he will get someone to look at them, but I will go back next week to check. It's wrong isn't it the poor things.
Lewis
You will find that the crusting underneath the scales goes and the chooks won't be bothered by the itching. It does take a while for the legs to look anything like normal again. In some cases they are never quite the same. This hen is recovering from a severe case of scaley leg mites and you can see the smoother skin underneath where the old scales have moulted off. It is important not to pick the scales off. mand and family
Hi Iwescott Thanks for the reply. I think the cock bird that I saw, must have had an extreme case as I couldn't even see the lifted scales. His legs were just all crusty. Any ideas? Ain't Nobody Here
Just another photo but of my Molly when she had scaley leg mite recently. I dunked her foot in surgical spirit then rubbed vaseline over her foot and ankle. I only did this once and her foot seemed loads better within a couple of days. I was planning to do it again but haven't bothered as it looks fine now.
mand and family
Thanks ANH I took some pictures on my phone camera, I will have to see if i can get them down loaded. Then they might not come out right. Anyway my OH thinks i should tell the RSPCA. What should I do ?
Ain't Nobody Here
I might be inclined to go back and see if they have actually done anything about it. If not, you could offer some friendly advice. If they still don't do anything about it, that might be the time to call the RSPCA.
mand and family
Hi ANH I went back on Saturday to see if anything had been done. But to my horror there was blood all over his feet, body and head. It looked like one of his spurs had riped off, and he was just sitting there! I've looked in one of my reference books and his nails were very long, they were curling. I went to see if any one was attending the building but it was all closed up, so I decided to ring the RSPCA. I went back on sunday to see if anything had happened and he wasn't in the cage so hopefully he was receiving some attention.
