chicken laying egg right now help is this normal?Sad Update

Recommended Posts

Have a look at that picture, thats a prolapse.

I've never had a chicken with a prolapse, but others on here have recently.

You should make sure it is clean, use a bit of water, and push it back in slowly.

If it pops out, keep trying and hopefully it should go back it. If it keeps coming out, you should consider taking it to a vet.

Hopefully someone will be here soon to help.

Thanks for the picture, yep, im afraid thats just what Tallulah looks like. Have tried pushing it back in and she just pushes it back out straight away. The other girls are leaving her alone at the moment and now they have all gone to bed.

Having read lots of other forums about this, the outlook doesnt look good. :( Tommoro I will try some preparation H and see what happens.

Im just upset because shes so young and beautiful and hasnt laid her 1st egg yet

:cry::cry:

Yes, i read that too but somehow i cant get over the 'gritty' feeling that must have, and also dont like pushing it in as she seemed to grunt abit when we tried before, bless her. Poor Tallulah, hopefully she can get some sleep tonight before I start 'treatment' again in the morning. Apparently, preperation H reduces it and it goes in on its own - we'll see

Hi Sandie

Sugar will shrink it like prep H, just dont rub it in or you may damage the membrane

Wash you hands then wash any poo or dirt off the prolapse if you can, sprinkle with some sugar and leave it for ten mins or as long as the chicken will keep still for, the prolapse my hen had did not go back in by itself but I guess it may work

if not...

Wash your hands again and use gentle pressure to ease the prolapse back in, you need to use a small finger to ease out the creases inside or it will pop back out again, think of a rubber glove finger inside out - you need to 'pop' out the 'finger' or it may also become a breeding ground for bacteria because its creased in on itself

Be very gentle and careful

If in any doubt try to keep her comfy overnight, keep the prolpase moist (vaseline may help) and get her to a vet asap

You must keep her separate until its sorted completely, if the other hens see it they will peck at it and may damage it

Thank you all so much. We tried everything we could and nothing seemed to work. She was just constantly pushing it back out again.

We took her to the vets this morning and unfortunately the vet said without spending hundreds of pounds and even then no gaurantees, the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep.

Cried buckets at vets when I had to leave her there and my little flock of 6 seems so much smaller now its just 5

Heartbroken.
