3hens2cats
Hello, I am currently using shredded paper in our litter tray but wondered whether anyone could offer any advice on the hemp stuff you can use to line the poop tray with. I find that straw doesn't really 'dry' it out and thought hemp might allow this and make it easier to just shake of into the composter? any advice appreciated thanks Naomi Fudge Crumpet is REALLY broody, really, really broody - poor chuck
chelsea
we line the poo trays with newspaper and aubiose (hemcore is similar) and I also use aubiose in the run, its really great stuff at absorbing poo. Also in the warm weather I pop in a piece of kitchen roll into each tray with a dot or two of citronella oil to help with the flies.
Margalot
Snap to the above! I do the same with newspaper and aubiose, but will have to get some citronella oil, flies are getting abundant at my coop!! great tip
cluckbok
If you go to www.hemcore.co.uk, it may tell you some more information and where to obtain this from. As our fellow omleteers said auboise is a similar thing, only difference is that it's not citronella impregnated like hemcore is and it's in slightly bigger chunks. We use newspaper, hemcore and a sprinkling of bokashi in our poop tray.
Rhoderunner
Why do you have to line the poop tray?! I've not done anything with mine. Is that wrong?!
fluffyknickers
I line my trays with newspaper and then aubiose on top. I now also add a sprinkling of citronella and also some sprigs of tobacco stalks (deters mites apprantly). I can then just take some poo out mid-week as needed and then at the weekend just lift out the newspaper and re-line it - job done! I also add some sprinkling of redmite, diatom and stalosan - just because!!!! Michelle
cluckbok
You don't have to line the poop tray but we think it keeps it cleaner and you haven't got to worry so much about getting any poos off the plastic.
Aggienator
I just use Aubiose, I find it excellent. I poo pick from it a couple of times a week and change it about once a fortnight. Mind you, my girls tend to sleep in the nest box so I put Aubiose in that and poo pick most days and complete change between once and twice a week (with dusting of red mite powder). Busybird
I use shredded paper in the nest box and don't line the poop tray. I like the hint about putting citronella on kitchen roll to deter flies as I noticed a few in the Eglu when I cleaned it on Tuesday Is citronella normally available from basic agricultural shops or is it specialist? katieadams
I just use newspaper, purely because it's so easy to clean, the whole lot just gets chucked in the composter I've not had them long enough for the flies to become a problem yet
The Dogmother
I don't use newspaper as it tends to attract moisture. Instead I just put a layer of Aubiose in the poo tray and it slides out easy enough into the compost when I clean out. I'm another one who uses a combo of citronella and eucalyptus oils to keep away any flies.
