seraphine
Attached should be a photo of a section of our garden fence. We're wondering if a chicken would be able to fit through the current gap/s? Any advice would be welcomed!
Looney
They don't look like massive gaps.....but if in doubt you could nail some chicken wire to the fence. We've done this at the bottom of the garden mainly as next door used to have a spaniel that liked to try stick his head through.
chick wiggle
Its quite difficult to gauge the actual size of gap but i dont think they would get through that. We have a few small similar gaps in our garden and the chooks really dont seem interested in squezing through it. Some of our fencing is only about 3 -4 ft high in places too and again they have never tried to jump it. Dont know if i have unusually lazy chooks tho Seems to me they are far more interested in scratching about in my flower beds!
Henhathnofury
What about the possibility of them getting their heads stuck? Also of a fox or cat reaching through a paw? Chicken wire might be wise, just for piece of mind.....
Guest
yep i have read on here where chickens have been sleeping up against the run and the fox has nipped them really badly and i think if they can stick their heads out can imagine running risk of it being bitten off by fox etc put a run of chicken wire around to be sure...good luck
seraphine
Thanks all. My husband has stapled chicken wire at one end of the fence, we just weren't sure whether to do it all round as it's quite a painstaking task! Still, needs must so he'll be back out there tomorrow
Budgies
I think it's a good idea to protect them from trying to get through the gaps! They're a bit ditzy at times - mine got stuck in a tiny gap between a flowerpot and a wall once (and the other went under the cover that I have over the garden bench and I spent ages looking for her - but that's another story!!!) Egluntyne
Having seen how my girls squeeze through gaps, I'd say don't risk it. Where there is a will there is a way.
seraphine
Thanks again We were out in the garden today but building raised beds and planting out - we'll get back on with the chickeny stuff this week!
Lewis
Personally I think it would be ok. We had a panel blow down a few weeks ago (the neighbours house is empty) and the chickens sit in the flowers and just look next door but are too scared to go through
