katieadams
You may have read that my lovely chickens have not yet laid me an egg so lets have a poll - when will they lay the first egg? Just to fill you in on progress, Beaky should be first, her comb is most developed and she has been crouching for about 4 or 5 days now, although not every time she's approached. None of the others are crouching, and they dont have much at all by way of combs, although their legs are starting to go yellow. Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen
Ain't Nobody Here
I reckon Thursday (assuming she'll lay a week after first crouching) . Alternatively, the first day you give up looking in the nestbox every half hour .
puddleduck
lol. we should have had bets which out of all of ours would lay first! I'm still waiting too! mine don't even seem to be crouching, daisy and dorris are approx 22 weeks and elsy is 23/24 weeks now! when we bought them home we agreed not to buy and eggs until they layed. hmmm. puddleduck
Beaky is definitely going to win the race, I think butterfly will be next. As for mine well OH keeps threatening them so I doubt they'll ever oblige now! I can't wait to hear when you get your 1st egg! (I am very sorry but I voted next week! I think maybe I was just a little bit )
smithy36
Hi Katie i am sticking to my original Thursday... I have been think about Beaky today, wondering if she is considering laying for you yet! Dont forget to get some treats ready for her ... we give tinned sweetcorn to the layers... and shake the paxo box at those that are witholding! Good luck! katieadams
No eggs first thing this morning - keep sending her eggy thoughts!!! My husband is starting to think Butterfly might sneak up the inside and lay first, but she's not crouching or anything so I doubt it! Thing is, they all lay brown eggs so Beaky would probably get the credit anyway!! They've never had mealworms before so I think I'll get them some for the 'thank you for the egg' treat, although maybe buying something in specially would jinx it !! smithy36
You might want to think about the box shaking.... OK i went a step further and actually fed them stuffing... leftovers from lunch..and told them they were now "oven ready" !! : It worked I got 6 eggs from 6 layers this morning! - even the babies went and sat on teh nest tonight... Ok a bit drastic, but we have to let them know who is bosss, I am not lightly steaming veg for them, feeding them raisins, grapes and sweetcorn as treats and keeping them in Hen heaven for fun - e want the odd egg for tea! Ok we do have them for fun really, but not tell them I am sticking with the Thursday bet!
katieadams
Well nothing this morning... I think you may be right, it may be time for no more mr nice guy, a trip to the stuffing aisle may be in order!! I keep telling them it's a good job they're pretty or they'd be in trouble but I don't think they're taking me seriously At least one of them is sitting in the nest box a lot, I think they may be under the impression that it's a litter try though
