I have taken the first step!

Recommended Posts

For those following the mystery quilt thread will have seen my 'shall I do this big quilt?' is it beyond my skills? Well today I have placed the order for the materials, plus rotary cutter & board to make this: http://www.cottonpatch.co.uk/acatalog/info_K2180.html

Certainly not a do in a weekend job and I will be coming on here for lots of help from all you experienced patchwork quilters!

I will let you know when it arrives as I understand they are waiting on 3 fabrics to come in.

Wishing you lots of luck with that one Tracy! It's beautiful and as you say, not a weekend job!!

I think we'll need regular updates on this project!!

Crumbs, I'd have thought the least they could do was include the book with the instructions in the price, or a discounted rate for it at least :o !

I bought the book cheap on Amazon to go through before I made my decision - if you add up the material needed in the book it comes to 9.95 metres and everyone sells this fabric at £10 per metre, so the 'kit price' is fair to be honest. However if you join their club for £5 a year you get a discount on all purchases, so by doing that and buying the cutter, board and ruler (discounted combined starter pack), plus thread and some extra pins I have got free delivery and £10 off so as long as I get a lovely looking quilt at the end I will be happy.

All the 'extra bits' I order arrived today, but still waiting for the fabric - I knew three were out of stock and waiting to come in 2 weeks ago, but the order says due in May/June! Will I be able to wait?

I fabric finally arrived Saturday 30th May. It took me 2 hours to iron it and I have started cutting it out. So far I have cut 154 out of the 589 pieces needed and that took me a number of hours. At least so far the most of the same fabric in a template has been 29 - the edging requires 104 each of two fabrics, so I am sure I will be bored at that one. The cutting wheel, mat & ruler were a well worth while investment - as each pice is eith square of a 45 degree cut it is far more accurate than using a template.

The colours look great, but this will be a long-term labour of love!

I don't think I have any choice but to cut it all at the same time (accept the edging squares I guess) as the cutting is in a certain order, so big pieces are cut first from each fabric, then the smaller elements, so I cannot just cut what I need for one square (it is 5 * 5 = 25 squares for the whole quilt) as it will mean not cutting the correct bits of fabric. As an example a few fabrics are 'fussy cut', so you centre a flower in each cut square, but some of the smaller bits from the same fabric are cut with no flower elements showing.

I will try to spread out fabrics and photo tonight.

Wow that is going to be one very bright & cheery quilt :o ! Fantastic, and good on you having the patience to cut all those pieces out....I think I would lose interest.......................... :anxious:

It is good we have had great weather all week - 'shall we eat out in the garden?' has been my suggestion every night as I have covered the dinning room table!

I am not sure they will make for a restful nights sleep when finished. I have been cutting out some more - just 35 diamonds to go then I have cut everything for the 25 main squares - that will 'just' leave the 54 squares and 208 triangle left to cut for the edges, so I am almost halfway - and that has taken a week!

I haven't made a mistake as yet - but I am only doing a bit each day and stoping before I get too tired each day - I can see if I hurried the job I would easily make a mistake though. I am hoping the edging will be quicker to cut as it is just squares & triangles - easier than diamonds (I hope!)

My plan is then to put the cut pieces grouped together in the pieces for each of the 25 large squares and then I can just take out a square at a time to work on.

Well I am on the last set of cuts now I need 104 * two fabrics in triangles - so far 72 done, so 136 to cut and then all the cutting is finished (for the front that is, binding & backing will be done later.
