quickcluck
Hi Guys just wondering if anyone near me has any of the the above purebreeds? I am having a freak out about the size of them and wondered if anyone had pics for comparison or I could maybe visit? I have them on order from the wernlas, but am now worried about the room! Also how long to they take to get to full size? Thanks kay Edited May 6, 2009 by Guest
abwsco
My friend has wyandottes and I was amazed at how big they are. Far bigger than my large bluebelle, speckeldy and light sussex. I've no pics though, sorry.

Redwing
I'm pretty sure Christian has a barnevelder (if I remember correctly) Egluntine has Sussex chicks but i can't remember if she has grown ones too?? Last time I saw a sussex it was plumper than the average chicken but not a great deal bigger. Hopefully someone will be along soon with some proper information! Tulip
I have a Light Sussex, Barnevelder and Piggy (sorry, I mean an Orp). We also had a 'normal' sized chook, a cream legbar, until recently. Here they all are together aged about 25 weeks: And here is the Sussex sitting on my arm being eager for her porridge: . They don't seem huge to me - just a little more big-chested and a fair bit heavier! We're in Chatham, Kent - PM me if you'd like to come and visit. Redwing
I'm pretty sure Christian has a barnevelder (if I remember correctly) Come to think of it he has a Sussex too They live in an Eglu so can't be too massive
quickcluck
Thanks Tulip.... Do any of your big girls live in the eglu? I am hoping my 4 big babies will go into an eglu untill they are integrated into the cube...
Tulip
They live in the cube, but we took the four of them on holiday to Hereford at Xmas in a hired eglu and they all fitted, surprisingly with room to spare. I'm sure it'll be fine until they're integrated
quickcluck
That sounds encouraging..... we are hoping that when the time comes they will sort themselves out with sleeping arrangement or they will all be VERY squashed! Is your barnevelder lovely? Does she lay much?
redfrock
my barnie is gorgeous and lays like a trooper!
Christian
I'm pretty sure Christian has a barnevelder (if I remember correctly) Yes I do and a light sussex and a buff sussex. My Buff sussex and Barnevelder share an eglu and the light sussex, silver sussex and maran share the other. They are big girls but are fine with plenty of room in the eglu. I often have to swap them all over as they like to snuggle up in one eglu of an evening!
quickcluck
Thanks Christian, that's reassuring, was having a freak out there for a while. I am off to a poultry show in July to go and see the real thing As long as they will all squash in for the intro I think i'll be fine. feemcg
I have Dottes and Sussex and they are my biggest birds, especially the Buff Sussex. I would say the Wyandottes are slower growers. I had 2 Dottes and 2 Sussex sleeping in an eglu no problem........although they've changed their minds now ......one Sussex in an eglu with the 2 Marans, and the rest in with the others in the cube. Tulip
my barnie is gorgeous and lays like a trooper! It's true, she is gorgeous. I think barnevelders almost always are - so *glossy*. Mine is also the only one of the three that crouches so the poor sod gets all the cuddles! She laid like a trooper (last couple of weeks notwithstanding, we have a no-shell issue at the mo).
