Tara123
Hi, One of my girls has been laying softies for ages. First I tried limestone flour and cod liver oil in there feed but had no luck with that so I brought some Zolcal-D. I've been using it for about a week and still no change with the softies. Is it safe to up the dosage or am I doing something wrong? Do I still need to add the cod liver oil to there feed too, for the vit D? I assumed the zolcal-D already has it in it, but am I wrong? P.S They always have grit with extra oyster shell in it available all the time too
Egluntyne
ZolcalD does have the Vit D in it. I wouldn't go overboard with the additives as it can upset the balance of other vitamins and elements like phosphorus an d magnesium, which won't do the hen any good. I'd cut back on all treats, make sure the hens have been wormed and give it a little while longer.
Ain't Nobody Here
I've finished the bottle of Zolcal D - it didn't seem to last that long . Things have perked up a bit - we're getting a couple of hard eggs most days now and much fewer softies (although still getting some ). I may get some cod liver oil and go back to the limestone flour till things are back to normal.
sandyhas3chucks
might be worth baking shells & feeding back or a month of calc c homeopathic remedy. "E" have you the info on what phosforous to calcium ratio is required or how acheived. By the way ..chard/spinach not good as it stops or slows calcium absorbtion.
