Can Buzzards take chickens?

Recommended Posts

Our girls were out today (in an Omlet netted area) when I noticed a buzzard overhead, they certainly noticed him too! Do I need to be worried or could they get to the safety of their run in time (door always open)?

Thank you

Hi Griffin

I'm in Oxfordshire too ( Abingdon). We had a buzzard circling at the weekend and we've had kites. They seem to look but not touch. Both times, they were very high and seemed to be cruising rather than hunting. I think buzzards prefer carrion too.

Hopefully... as I've got bantams...

We've had buzzards here for quite a long time - the girls aren't bothered, although they were a bit alarmed the first time they saw the red kite, then they weren't fussed with that one either (although I haven't seen it for ages now - think it's moved on).

A buzzard picked up one of my girls the other week, it dropped it at the other side of the electric fence. Fortunately it was my biggest girl and she is quite heavy so I don't think that it got a proper grip of her. There was a lot of feathers but it didn't pierce her skin. She was quite shaken for a while though. Just glad I was in the garden at the time.
