craftyhunnypie
If I grow carrots in a tub trug or tin bath, will I need to make drainage holes? Got some carrot seed after watching Gardeners World the other week. Thought I'd give them a try. Only ever grown carrot top plants in a saucer of water when I was little. Chickpea
Yes indeedy. Carrots like it very free draining, in fact, too much water leads to a lot of top growth at the expense of root development. Good luck, I'm sure they'll turn out fine! We've had a lot of luck with the variety James Scarlet Intermediate this year.
xChicken04x
Emma, I'm growing carrots for the first time this year too. I've got mine in large tubs and they seem to be doing very well. I found these two links very helpful when starting out: http://www.vegetable-garden-guide.com/growing-carrots.html http://www.vegetable-garden-guide.com/how-to-grow-carrots.html
AJuff
I have some purple Haze carrots in a tall plant pot, they've overwintered in the greenhouse and will be ready in another week or so. I've just planted some more out in the raised bed and they are so tiny!!
chooklady
I'm growing some carrots for the first time too. I decided on the Chantenay carrots, they are taking a long time to grow but they are coming along, I've got mine in a raised bed.
chickencam
carrots do take a while but they are so worth it
Cinnamon
They are worth it, & probably my favourite thing to eat from the garden. When you thin them initially,I tend to not thin them too much, then pull every other one as a baby size when they are a bit bigger. They taste wonderful, & the hens go mad for the tops too. chickencam
My hens look at me in horror when i suggest they might like to try carrot tops. Mine are addicted to bolted spinach at the moment, I have the stalks standing in a bucket of water and they perch on the side pulling it to shreds. We have lovely orange egg yolks at the moment
craftyhunnypie
I haven't planted my carrot seeds yet. I must find a suitable container! Emma.x
