judemogwai
If the chickens wings are clipped, how high does your garden fence have to be... don't want them next door in the first week..
Ain't Nobody Here
Depends if they find a sneaky launch pad beside your fence . I have a roughly 3 1/2 ft wall with some trellis attached to the top and they've never attempted to get over it. Some chickens are flightier (and nosier ) than others though, and may attempt higher. That wasn't much help, was it ?
Budgies
When the chap from Omlet put up our run 3 years ago I asked the same question and he said they wouldn't get over a 5foot fence! Don't forget that foxes can manage a much higher wall or fence though, so its advisable to supervise freeranging if you can
eggalp
now i don't know how true this is but the breeder i get my hens from says that white hens are more likely to be 'flighty'. I assume that it only applies to pure white hens as i have a white sussex who is a big heavy beast (she's only 24 weeks old!) and i don't think she would even make it off the ground She's beautiful! I have a 5 ft hedge around the garden and none of them have ever tried to escape - i think once they know where they live they wont make any effort to escape - i think mine think that if they go next door they might not get fed - thats enough for them to stay on the ground in my garden!! lucie
We have 6ft fences so never had a problem. But, Flo, my , managed to fly / jump up on to my 4 1/2ft cardboard tower I had built as a short term solution to protecting my new bay tree.... Gamebird
It's not so much keeping your chickens in but keeping the foxes out. Foxes can easily scale a 7' fence and higher if they have something to climb onto first. I have my chickens behind electric fencing which is only 3'7" high. They haven't attempted to fly over it but they do have their wings clipped.

Lewis
now i don't know how true this is but the breeder i get my hens from says that white hens are more likely to be 'flighty'. Well my 2 White Stars (Alvin is my avatar ) were definately more flighty. We also had a Chicken of Fate Cream Legbar called Gertrude come and visit us for a few days last year, and she flew from down the road (I assume not all in one go )
