Woodchick
I have just spent the last 20 minutes in the garden trying to figure out why one of my girls was making enough noise to wake the dead. I could see absolutely nothing, and she didn't seem in any pain or in any way ill, but boy was she agitated about something. They arrived exactly one year last Saturday and haven't moulted yet (they're omlet girls) although they are looking a little lack lustre in the feather department I think. All three did go to bed - with a fair amount of noise from madam on the way in - and seem to be settled now. I have done a thorough patrol of the garden - any one any ideas what the matter could be? Up until then all seemed normal; they've free-ranged all day and had their evening pasta. Would appreciate any thoughts.
Patricia W
Did you look in the sky? My lot created one day and it was only when my neighbour asked if I'd seen the red kite circling over head that I realised what it was. Since the, they've done it for buzzards, air balloons ( which also terrify the dog) and police helicopters.. Tricia
Woodchick
Thanks for the quick response. I didn't think of that although there was a lot of bird noise which usually stops when there is a bird of prey about. Having said that, she was definitely looking up and they can get a bit narked with the magpies so maybe it was that.
Egluntyne
We had the police helicopter swooping and diving yesterday. The hens went berserk. They definitely aren't keen on big things in the sky.
Budgies
Scary things in the sky is probably it, but just wondering whether they've got redmite lurking in their house and didn't much want to go to bed? I don't know if they would create a racket like that - I've heard of hens refusing to go into their houses and huddling elsewhere overnight. Especially as you say their feathers are lacklustre, might be worth spraying/dusting them if you haven't lately.
Woodchick
Apologies for late response - I gave up last night to deal with a large mouse and three excited cats! Thanks for redmite suggestion. That did cross my mind although she settled down very happily once inside but I will do some dusting this evening when I get home.
