Home made brooder - is this ok for 4 chicks?

Recommended Posts

brooder.jpg

The size is 45 x 70 cm (17.5 x 27.5 inches) and the heat lamp has a 50 watt infra red bulb in it. I am unsure how high this needs to be, currently it's 14cm from the flooring, although the bulb itself is higher than that by a few cm's.

I'm going to use two shallow jam jar lids to begin with for their food and water, and have used J cloths to cover the floor with as it's quite slippery.

Anything else I need to do?? It's the lamp distance that's stumping me at the moment. This is all new to me - it's quite possibly not that difficult, but I don't want to make a mistake!:anxious:

That looks good :)

I used Bisto lids for water as they are a bit deeper.

I used the same mesh over the top of the quail brooder - when they were a week old of so, if you walked over they'd jump up (through the mesh!) and sit in your hands!

I put finer mesh on afterwards

A good thing I read was if you put your palm down under the heat lamp, after a minute it should have warmed the top side of your hand so it is nice and warm, not hot or cold.

If they're all huddled up under it, I'd lower it a bit. There is a picture on that pdf of how they should be spread out :D

Looks great place a thermometer under the lamp on the bottom of the brooder and you can adjust the height of the lamp to get the temperature correct. you will need to raise the lamp as they feather over the next few weeks so above the mesh for then. If you are getting day olds you won't need to cover the top with mesh yet as they won't be able to fly until they get wing feathers, unless you have to keep a cat or else out of the brooder. I used a large box for a brooder also I used paper towels for the first week until they knew what was food then placed pine shavings in the brooder with paper towels on top for a day so they could get used to the change. Be careful of open dishes of water as they fall asleep everywhere and can drown in the dish. Mine are 6 weeks old now and off the heat lamp I really enjoyed raising them. This is a picture of my setup I have a cardboard circle inside of the large box to keep them under the heat for the first few days until they were able to walk around and find the warmth themselves, you don't want them to get stuck into a corner. They will move away from the heat if they are to warm I had the lamp off to one side.

Whats the marbles for?

That looks great what you have done when I had my last lot of chicks, I found that if they were making noise and you go in they are all away from the heat as long as they have food and water then they are too hot and if they were making noise and all huddled under the heat then they are too cold, I had my heat to one side, and away from the food and water.
