we picked up 2 lovely girls at the weekend (not a clue how to post pictures! may have to ask hubby later!!!) a BelleBlue and a White Ranger. They are beautiful!!! I can see now how the 'posh'chicken side of things can get so addictive!

We have 4 ex-batts in a cube with a run extension, the new girls are in an eglu.

2 questions.......

we were warned that the white ranger would be a bit flighty/nervy and he did clip her wing to save her from taking on as soon as we got home. But reading another thread I am a bit nervous of freeranging her if she is liable to fly away? Its not an immediate problem as they will not be freeranging for a while, but any experience with a white ranger would be appreciated........is this a good time to start talking walk in run with hubby???!!!???

The chap where we got the girls from, lets call him Mr Chicken, said that we would be better to intergrate them as of next week to give them plenty of settling down time before they come into lay (they are 16wks). But can I really do that if they are too nervy to freerange? My gut feeling is to let them come into lay in the eglu, and then intergrate them a few weeks later. Again any ideas...?

Gosh I am being a worrysome chicken mummy aren't I

Like you I have chickens in a cube & eglu. The new girls have been in the Eglu since April, but they do all free range together now (including a cream legbar who is very good at flying, even with a clipped wing). I will not finally integrate them until they start laying. They only free range when I am sitting watching them and the only flying issues I have had is when one of the big girls has tried to peck her - twice she has flown above the netting, once getting out, but the natural thing then is to try and run back home (through the netting) to be with the other chickens so she was easy to pick up and move.

Good luck!

I am glad I am not the only one that is feeling a bit soft!

We let the other girls free range pretty much every afternoon, I am around but not always in the garden, but I 'pose like you I could free range them when I am actively out there watching.

I was worried about flying if the others pecked at Muffin, I guess that is a possibility!
