Thinking of selling a few cakes..................

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if this is OK :?: I love baking and it's said my cakes are alright :) I was thinking of advertising thro local shops etc. Home baked cakes made with home grown eggs. I was thinking of a couple a week so not exactly a commercial concern :) Does anyone know the legalities of this & what I would have to do :?: Thanks as always Axx

Ooohh yes I do!

I am in the process of starting my own small business making birthday and wedding cakes.

You need to be registered with the local council - call environmental health they are really friendly and there to help you,

the lady that came to see me last week came and had a chat gave me a couple of leaflets and when I asked she said I could use my own eggs :D:D:D I was worried as they are not lion stamped and as we have hatched a few of our own they are not all vaccinated.

As long as I am cautious with hygine and don;t use raw egg then they are happy!:dance::dance: I was worried they wouldn't let me use the eggs

you also need product and public liability insurance and to inform your mortgage company (assuming you have one)and if you deliver you need to notify car insurance too but thats it!

If you are doign cream cakes and catering it will be a little different and you have to abide by the 4 hr rule for stuff out of the fridfe but Environmental health will advise,

I scrubbed every inch of my kitchen and they hardly looked!

You need to let the tax man know to and keep a record of your expenditure and income and do a tax return at the end of the year.

As I am just starting out and only doing a little I got my insurance through the british sugar craft guild. you have to become a member but as long you take less than £7000 a year (I think) you can get their insurance to get started off, I am hoping to do a lot more in a few years but while the boys are so small I think this will be plenty

Not sure if cakes that aren;t decorated come under the sugar craft thing but its worth looking into they have a website, total cost of membership and insurance was about £35 the cheapest insurance I could get other than this was about £100 :shock::shock:

PM me if you want any more info

This is almost exactly the advice i recived from environmental health as well - they are not bothered about cake makers, really. They're a lot more concrned about the kebab vans the you see by the side of the road and stuff like that!
