wildchild
Hello again, I need some more advice... I have now by the looks of things, three of my four chicks, growing spurs? I think this means they will be male! I have only one that looks female, the others are occassionally squaring up already, at only four weeks old! I don't want to cull them! Is there anywhere in Dorset or nearby counties where they can be rehomed? I would be devestated if they hurt each other through fighting! Can anyone please help? Do only the males get spurs? They just look like tiny spikes growing out from their ankles at the moment. Please, any advice would be graciously welcomed!!! Love me x
Lewis
Females can grow spurs, so you may be lucky . I hate to say it but this all needs to be planned before getting the chicks You could try local farms, breeders, rescue centres, petting zoo's, but if they're not interested you may have to cull them or find someone else to do it for you. Try offering them on the Practical Poultry forum?
lounut
hello, i had the same problem about two weeks ago, my 13 week old light sussex bantam who ithought was a hen started crowing and turned from a hen to a full blown cockerel within a week!!! i live in somerset and after phoning around a million places i eventually found someone in dorset on the poultry pages website who was really happy to take him, so there are people out there you just have to be prepared to phone around. good luck xxxx
The Dogmother
As Lewis has said, spurs are no indication of sex with chooks. Can you post some photos so that we can help you sex them?
tom123
http://www.little-misses-chickens.co.uk/ This lady re homes any unwanted hens/cockerels etc. She is a lovely lady and lives in wiltshire, I know its a long way but she also sells hens so you could pick up some friends for your lonely chick. ood Luck Tom
*mummy_hen*
I would hold fire for a little while....one of my ex-batt girlies has spurs, i originally thought they were growths as had never had chickens before She is most certainly a hen so it isn't a definite sign that they will be male! Redwing
One of my hens has stumpy spurs, she lays eggs so is certainly no boy
