I've got a bluebell who has been laying well now for 6 weeks. Her comb has grown, but is black/grey in colour, not red like my other two hybrids...sussex/rhodes. She doesn't seem to be unwell at all...should I be worried about the lack of a red comb or not?? Many thanks in advance of any views!

My bluebelles both have normal coloured combs. I am not sure that different coloured combs are a problem but someone else I am sure will be along soon to confirm

They certainly can have black or mauve combs and it's totally natural.

 

As with all hybrids, they vary within the colour range for that particular type of bird. Some have redder combs and lighter legs, while others have much bluer face furniture and dark legs.

My bluebelle had a very dark grey/black comb with very dark legs too.

Muddles has a very red comb, but Starlet has a blacky comb. It's perfectly fine, it's just a breed thing!

Mine both have greyish combs.

I posted a thread about this a while ago as I had similar concerns. Bella's comb is grey and I was reassured by all the different colours mentioned. Bella is still not laying however, much to my OH's chagrin!

My brother in law has a bluebell and she is very dark in colour, bother her markings and her comb and legs!!

Hi, just to add to the reassurance... my bluebelle Tallulah-Belle has a splodgy black purple comb and face. I was concerned for a while, but she is my most consistent layer, and she is healthy, so i stopped worrying.

Mine started just red, but during the first year is changed - it is like she has freckles - black spots on a red comb, she has a big comd & rattles - all the same covered with black spots.

Dipper has a gray comb also!

Gertrude has, too.

She also has a black beak.

My mum says she doesn't look like a proper chicken
