aqualiv
I notice a few of you have chickens that have died How long did they live for? And whats the average life span? Olivia
Mel (& Paul)
Some chickens could live up to ten or even fifteen years.
Gallina
Only pure breeds live that long. As I understand it, hybrids wear themselves out laying and may only survive three years. Has anyone got a hybrid more than three years old?
gooner.girl
3 years? I've had hamsters live longer then that! I'm sure i read somewhere that on average hybrids live 4-5 years? Can't remember where i read it though! And have no personal experience to back it up!

Gallina
I expect spoilt chickens do live longer than three years, although their egg-production falls in the third year. But I don't think a hybrid could reach the age of ten. It would be interesting to know who had the oldest hybrid on Omlet list. My surviving hybrid is just over a year and half, but I am sure hundreds of people can beat that.
Trish
My two oldest girls are almost 2 but I'm pretty sure there are a good number older than that here
Mrs Frugal
Jenny and Clarry have to be 2 and a half now and although Clarry's been ailing since June last year, Jenny's still hale and hearty and lays an egg most days. Clarry's been at death's door so many times since last June that I think she's got a very strong will to live!
MrsMurphy
The guy I bought my girls from says that one of his hybrids is 8 years old and still laying an egg a week. Not bad, I say.
