sami
Hi, Fairly new to keeping chickens.. and we picked up a couple of 6week old chicks yesterday. The guy we bought them from said he thought they were female (he hatched them, but didn't breed them we think) but wouldn't know for sure for another 3 weeks or so. Now I've done some research on these breeds, and they are autosexing breeds apparently, but I didn't see them from hatching, so can't tell what they are, as none of the sites I found show you pictures of older chicks, only day old ones. I'd like to know if anyone can tell the sex of them please, as if they are boys, they'll have to be sold on again, as we can't keep males. Here's some pictures.. sami
Have just called the man back, and he offered to take them back, and give us our money back.. He didn't know you could sex them straight away, he'd never had a legbar before... So we're off to take them back He did say he'd not been keeping them that long. No harm done. ETA: We live in Nottinghamshire.. Mansfield.

bellekatz
The welsummer looks like a girl to me - the males don't have the lacing on the feathers on the back of the neck and they have black breast feathers not brown The legbar definitley looks like a boy though.............. tom123
The welsummer looks like a girl to me - the males don't have the lacing on the feathers on the back of the neck and they have black breast feathers not brown I do think it is a boy as this is my girl and she is about 10 weeks old with hardly any comb... sami
Took the two boys back, and got our money back.. He said it was fine, as he'd just had an email from someone wanting a Legbar Cockerel Went elsewhere, where they had a lot of chickens to choose from, a lot of adult hens for sale.. and happened to have an adult Cream Legbar, already laying, which was great! Also picked up a Black Rock hen, a Cream Legbar and Maran chicks, (He says these 2 are female, so I really hope they are this time, but looking at the pics before and after, I can't see a lot of difference, so I hope I haven't done it again!! ) and a very pretty Silver Laced Wyandotte Bantam hen. My partner has always wanted ducks too, so we ended up with two Aylesbury's as well!

sami
I love the fluffy ducklings, they're only 5 weeks old! The one with the orange bill is called Daisy Duke.. Name still pending on the other! Do you guys know where the cheapest place to get chicken wire / aviary mesh is? Being as we've got a bit carried away with these chickens, we need to build a nice big run for them! sami
I thought it was by the time I got it home It was under unnatural light in the barn we got it from, and it looked a lot browner! Ah well.. they did say we can swap it if it turned out to be a boy.. they had another type of Wyandotte chick in there too.. Something like Golden Barred? Not gold lace, another one. I'll just stick with my hen. She's definately female!
tom123
Good Good Golden barred There's is barred... or Silver pencilled? Partidge? Good Luck Tom
sami
Took some more pictures... So, definately a boy then? How about the Maran? Are they easy to sex at this size?? Here's the Silver Laced Wyandotte Bantam, as she didn't get in on the other pics! and Madonna.. miss boss chicken, eyeing up our strawberries! tom123
Mmmm... Ye the Cream Legbar is pretty much defiantly a boy Here is a 3month old pullet... And here's some boys... The maran... Here is a pic of 3 3month old marans, 2 girls and a boy. I think you have a girl there, the boys necks are always lighter than the girls... Yours does have the same size comb as the legbar though Your wyandotte is lovely, Mine looks just like that just buff-laced instead! Good Luck Tom
Griffin
I'd say your Maran is a girl. In my experience the boys seem to have more white. The Legbar is definitely a boy, just look at that comb already!
Egg Lou
Yup another boy legbar I'm afraid other look great though!

Valkyrie
Thanks for bumping this Lewis - missed the lovely pics - even if some were boys. I wonder if the Maran turned out as nutty as ours.
