help, ill chicken after only 3 weeks

Recommended Posts

My lovely Gingernut Princess Buttercup is very ill. I noted her pale face and comb yesterday and inspected her today and saw both eyes we're swollen. Altho she is eating and drinking and laid an egg today.

A quick trip to the vet showed not only swollen but pus all around eyes and comb and wattle. She has had two lots of antibiotics and face cleaned with saline solution, but now is just sitting hunched in sleeping position in the eglu run. I have her on a course of antibiotics now.

Princess Daisy is nudging her every so often, she is fine, but it is so sad.

I feel particularly helpless as not had chickens before and didn't anticipate this kind of prob after only 3 weeks - I thought they came innoculated?

Anyone any idea of cause and solution. My toddlers will be so sad tomorrow is she has not made it, i know we have only known her 3 weeks but they are both part of the family.

Thanks

Amanda

Thanks, she seems a little more perky today. Last night I was pretty certain she wouldn't get thru the night so pleased the antibiotics are getting to work. Bathed her again, her eyes still look terrible, she is still rubbing them on her sides, but she is atleast pecking about the garden with Daisy.

I spoke to Omlet who to be honest didn't seem that interested. I am not sure if its a call centre? I have emailed barbara but not heard anything back. My vets concern was if its contagious, and I have passed the innoculation stuff onto him that they emailed thru.

Just hope that Buttercup survives this, I know birds pretty well as my mum has huge aviaries and I used to rear the baby birds - she has all sorts from cockateels, parrots, finches to budgies and conures, so I know that a bird has got to want to live for the meds to work.

Any other suggestions on what caused this would be helpful?

Thanks

Amanda
