4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

Having now paid a visit to Salop Chuck's girls and their cube, I'm now wondering which way to go with my chooks... Do I get a cube or an eglu ? I want a WIR and I've got it all planned out, but do I make it with the cube inside or outside, or do I put an eglu inside on a table, or what? Difficult decisions!

 

BTW for reference I'm planning on getting 4 chickens to start with, but I know from reading the forum how quickly these things can expand!

I think if you already know you'll be expanding in future, you should go for the cube (if you have the space for it). Putting it outside a walk in run makes it more easily accessible for cleaning etc and leaves more space inside the run. An eglu limits you to about 4 hens so you'd be stuck with that straight off .

 

I love my eglu on a table in my WIR but I don't really have space for anything more (although I'm planning on 2 new girls as mine have stopped laying ). That will be my limit though .

I've voted for what I'd like, not what I already have! The Cube is great, but it would be even better (in my view) with a WIR, and with the Cube on the outside for egg retrieval, poo-tray emptying and general cleaning. That's what I'm hoping to do.

I voted for cube on outside of WIR as they is my set up at the moment.

 

I have had an eglu inside my WIR too but found that I end up getting aubiose all over my shoes when going to collect eggs etc!

I voted eglu inside the WIR. Then your girls are "doubley" protected against predators and the elements. I have a cube inside my WIR and its so huge and cumbersome to move I can understand why people have them outside. I have always preferred the eglu to the cube.

Me too! It provides more flexibility too, as if you then want to expand your flock to have bantams you can then let them live in separate housing and not worry about introductions etc.

Another Eglu fan here. I've just added a second Eglu inside my WIR I like them soo much. I just can't get anywhere near as excited about the look of the cube (sorry cube fans ).

Another eglu fan too! We will hopefully build our WIR this summer and have a second eglu for intros. Only having 4 girls though so they should eventually move into one.

I found that too, but solved the problem by putting bark chippings by the door area. The Aubiose sticks to that better than your shoes and therefore stays in the run as you exit - marvellous! You do need to keep the bark moist to retain the 'stickiness', which is easy, and the chooks seem to like it better that way too.

I know, but at least I could pick them up and clean them Liz! I have to rely on OH now to move the mountain of the cube.

I can understand the picking up issue. When I was helping at the Bath and West I'd never had to manoeuvre it before and so wasn't very good at showing the wheeling bit...

Having just about made up my mind to get a nice and decide on the layout of my WIR later, I now seem to have started bidding on a very pretty on ebay instead... Wonder how that happened...
