I've Upset The Baby Brahmas.

Recommended Posts

I'm a bad chooky mummy today. I've upset the baby Brahmas. Bless their socks I feel awful for having upset them.

I've been trying to intergrate Tiger Lily in with the rest of the gang. Her baby Brahmas are eight weeks old now and it's time for her to cut the apron strings. Knowing how difficult it'd be to introduce just the one hen I've been on hand most of the time, watching everyone and for the past week or so she's been free ranging with them. Against my better judgement she insisted on having the Brahmas out free ranging with her and it soon became clear she was right, she carried on looking after them while making sure everyone else kept a respectful distance. This timid little girl who arrived here a nervous wreck eight weeks ago quickly shot up through the ranks to become third in command in days! "Ooops, word censored!"ody messes with her!

The Brahmas have loved free ranging but I worry about them being so little, athough they're almost as big as their mum. My grand plan was to introduce the other growers to the Brahmas today and for them all to share the big run & coop Tiger Lily and them had been in. This is where it all went wrong. A, the Brahmas hated being confined to the run and paced backwards and forwards screaming. B, the Dorking & Orpington lads are horrid bullies who wanted to beat up the sweet innocent Brahma girls. I thought the girls would just turn around and slap the boys, afterall they're used to the adults now so these young whippersnappers ought to be no bother but they didn't, they are far too soft & gentle, haven't a nasty bone in their body and I really feared for their lives so I had to rescue the girls :(

Tiger Lily was tonight given the choice of which coop she retired to, the ex-batts or in with the rable. She's chosen to be with the ex-batts and her new best friend Mrs Pants has joined her. I'll be getting up early because I don't trust Pants with the ex-batts but I knew she'd defend her friend if they picked on her.

The Brahmas have lost their home and their mum all in one day. They're looking very sorry for themselves and are in bed in the garage now. They'll carry on sleeping there until I think they're big enough to sleep with everyone else. And as they're safer free ranging than being in the run with the murderous Dorkings & Orps they'll be doing that again tomorrow.

The Dorkings and Orps are not very nice people at all  They've always been quite aggressive towards me. I don't know wether that's just what they're like as a breed but Forrest Gump my Light Sussex boy has a brilliant temperament, always has been as good as gold. I was quite shocked by how hostile they were today and if the Dorkings in particular had been a bit bigger I would've quite cheerfully killed them both! I'm very much looking forward to my Dorking dinner in a few months time!

They're fine this morning. They love free ranging. They get all the best bits. Our new grass is surrounded by Omlet netting which they can squeeze through so while the rable look on enviously they're chomping their way through the grass  If they think something interesting going on the other side they hop through
