Baggage

By Evelyn Colbath

From the Shelter Dog

Will You Help Me Unpack?"

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,

and all nicely tucked in my warm new bed,

I should unpack my baggage, lest I forget,

There is so much to carry, so much to regret...

Hmm...Yes there it is, right on top, let's first unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,

And there by my leash hides Fear and hides Shame,

As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave,

I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.

I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,

but I wasn't good enough for they didn't want me.

Will you add to my baggage? Will you help me unpack?

Or recoil from my things and take me right back?

Do you have the time to help me unpack?

To put away my baggage, and never repack?

I pray that you do, for I'm so tired you see,

But I do come with baggage, do you still want me?

Nearly had me in tears :(

My lurcher before Ruby (I had a gap while Rosie was little) was a rescue (as all my others have been apart from Rubes), she had bee left in a flat after the owners moved out. She was malnourished, covered in mange and sores and terrified of everything. I gave her a no.1 haircut, bathed her and treated the mange and sores.

Jezebel lived until she was 16, when she was PTS after her congestive heart failure started to seriously affect her quality of life. She was the sweetest dog ever, with a lovely nature and devoted to me and Rosie (who she guarded like a lioness). She unpacked her baggage and thanked us many times over for her new home.

Here's one of her after rolling in the mossy grass:
