What is the easiest floor of a WIR to keep clean?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm new round here, so hope you don't mind me jumping in with a question straight away!

We have recently moved and are in the middle of building a new walk in run :D

The walk in run is 9ft by 6ft and will house 2 or 3 chooks.

I just can't decide on what to have on the floor! It will all be slabbed but what shall I put on top?

Woodchips?

Bark?

Auboise?

Or should I just leave it as slabs so I can hose it down every day? (obviously would still provide them with a container to dust bathe in).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm looking for the easiest and cleanest option to be honest!

Hi Michy, welcome to the forum. We are in the middle of building our walk in run too and part of it is concrete. From what i have gathered on here the best bedding is auboise or easibed so long as the run has a roof. I am sure someone wiser will be along shortly to advise you some more. Good luck with your run and we do like pictures on here when your finished :D

I would go for aubiose/hemcore. They love to scratch around in it and most of their poo disappears! It gets dried up by the bedding and makes life so much easier. Most people with WIR's use it and only give it a good clean out every 4-6 weeks. I still have the standard eglu run and use it in there.

I use Stalosan F which is a powder that I sprinkle all over my concrete and it disenfects it before I add my new bedding on... I use a mixture of beddings, I LOVE aubiose however at the moment I am trying bliss (dont like it much) so am using it up with some bedmax (which I love!)

my hens scratch around in the bedding I scatter meal works and grit in there or anything else they might be having like corn/sweetworn?? but my girls come out all afternoon/evening when we are here so they get scratching about time then also. :)
