funky-chicken
We have four hens and took one out this morning to bring in as she's been poorly with sour crop. When we took her out there were no eggs as the girls usually lay late morning. When my hubby checked mid-day there were four eggs! So one hen must have laid twice. I wonder if she's laid one after the other or popped back in after her first lay and deposited a second egg? I think maybe one of the girls must be thanking us for the tray of mealworms they were given yesterday! Jan.
Redwing
as if by magic! clever chook, I believe it can happen but its not that common
saracook31
This has happened one or twice with mine, think it was our young bluebelle both times. I've heard it can happen to hens in their prime laying period quite often. Just make sure they've got lots of shell and grit as they'll need even more to make 2 shells! chickencam
My Light Sussex laid 2 in one day last year but nor at the same time. One was early and one was late.
funky-chicken
Whichever girl it was I think she may have been covering for our poorly hen who's not been laying. Not that it bothers us if one isn't laying, we just want to see her better. These girls are clever old things, although it's not happened again since. Thank you 'sara' re the tip on shell and grit. They get lots of grit but is 'shell' extra clam shell or their own eggshells recycled back to them? Jan.x
saracook31
I use oyster shell, I have some bigger pieces which comes mixed with grit which I put on the floor in WIR for them to find. And include some extra small pieces in their food if they need a boost! I have tried using their own egg shells but they have to be cooked and I was told they shouldn't have the "skin" inside the egg so makes it tricky!
