Faverolles and "Warbuffop" chicks

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've been a lurker of the forum for a while but I now have something to post!

I hatched, "Napkin", a Salmon Faverolles on Monday morning. He/she (I think it's probably that it's a he because of the black on his wings at birth - we're taking bets!) was so lonely that and after much frantic phoning I managed to find two X Buff Orp/Warren day olds (they're really big, considering) which I picked up yesterday. No other day olds in the whole of Cornwall and Devon apparently! There's been a little bit of argy-bargy going on today but I've added some cider vinegar to their water so hopefully there will be peace sometime soon.

The striped warbuffop ( my attempt at naming the cross. Is there an actual name for this cross that I don't know about?) is called, Zennor, and the other one with a spot on her head is called Merrymaid (Lord, I hope that one is a girl otherwise it'll be quite embarrassing for him). Napkin is the pale, smaller one. These photos were taken just before I cleaned their messy brooder and bottoms so forgive the poo!

I've got some Gold/Blue Laced Wyandotte Bantams and Lemon Cuckoo Pekins in the inccy due on Monday! Whooopppeeee! Exciting times. All being well, I'll post some piccies of them when they arrive if anyone is interested. I just love chicken photos, especially baby pics.

I read somewhere that some Salmon Faverolle boys have a black line on their backs at birth. I had one hatch four weeks ago, no black line, and the wing feathers were whitey grey when they came through, salmon took about ten days to appear. Fortunately I had four other eggs hatch with other breeds at the same time so she had friends.

I've just tried again to hatch more Faverolles. Started with 12 eggs, 6 were clear, the rest were all pretty much killed off by a four hour power cut last Thursday. One hatched yesterday and I think that'll be it now. I'm now on the hunt for day olds too because I don't think my four week olds will accept it. Poor thing needs friends it's own size.

Thanks all!

Griffin - I'm so sorry about the power cut but at least you saved one. I'm sure by now you've found some friends for him. Did you manage to find some Salmon Fav chicks or did you get something different? Doing research on Faverolles is really fascinating (although my friends and family don't seem to understand this :D) I'd love to find some of the more unusual colours but I can't find many good photos apart from on this site.

Do you have any photos of your flock? I'd love to see them if you do. Napkin's feathers keep confusing me. It's still too early I guess...

Nigel Retallack, who breeds Faverolles in Cornwall, told me that he finds it easier to sex the chicks while they're still damp from the hatch and the black on the wing and back is clear to see. :?

Daphne - :D He/she is called Napkin because when I was given the egg, it was wrapped up in a napkin and it kind of stuck. If he's a cock then it might be short for Napoleon.

Geordie Buff Orp! Love it!

Here they are:

Awww Teri and Lwescott, that's so kind of you, especially since your photos are so wonderful. I'll pass your regards on to the Vogue chicks, they're such posers.

The idea of having a thread for photos is brilliant. There are so many good photos posted here that can go unnoticed so it'd be lovely to have them all in one place.

Here are the little 'uns at 1 week old. I haven't bothered them with photoshoots since then, they're far too busy and important.
