The culprit

Recommended Posts

I have always read that Orpingtons are slow to mature, quite and gentle, but Coco Chanel is my only layer at the moment (I know because I caught her in the act) and she makes the most racket plus she LOVES ripping the feathers out of Lucy and Ethel.

Are you talking about me?!?!?

Quiet and gentle are not two word I would put in a sentence with my Orpies....at least not until Buffie hatched her Bufflings, she's a wonderful mummy.......the others though...........loud & thuggish, yes they are more appropriate words, especially loud..have you heard my girls "going off on one"...if not I'll post it again

When I posted it this afternoon, all three dogs came running through from the front room in a blind panic that their feathered friends were in trouble...........I was creased up in hysterical tears....especially when DH followed them bleary eyed having just awoken from a nap asking what the problem was outside...the chooks were all happily tootling around

Fortunately they are the other side of the garden to the neighbours (it's quite big!) and the run is positioned so that the noise is buffered by our house....I do occasionally ask if their noise is a problem but I haven't had any direct complaints........... yet  ! Usually only one or two get vocal, not 6 or 7 of them as was this case. They used to have a "holler in a round" system where one would start then another carry on & so on around the flock, or whoever wanted to join in - normally the Orpies, this seems to have stopped. Also they create if they are startled/alarmed by the neighbours cats a-visiting.....the cat departs rapidly

The worst time was at about 5am after I had moved Buffie into the eglu overnight with her eggs...did I mention they are now Bufflings (hatch)(hatch)(hatch) , not !egg!!egg!!egg! ....anyway, I had forgotten to remove the waterproof cover I'd had draped over Buffie's nesting box & it was slightly flapping in the fairly strong breeze....they were all freaked out by it & created absolute murder. I hit the ground running, sorted the matter in seconds & they all settled down to breakfast happily...I didn't have the guts to ask the neighbours if they had been disturbed
