Collecting new chooks

Recommended Posts

(cube green)

Hi, I'm probably going to buy my new chickens from 2 different sources but on the same day, will it be best to collect them and put them all in the same travel box ( approx 1/2 hours journey between the 2 places) or do I need to separate them ?? sorry if this sounds silly..

Not silly at all, I'd have them travelling in two separate boxes, as knowing my luck I'd end up with the first lot leaping out as I slotted the second lot in  !

Good luck with your newbies, and no question is a silly one, we've all been beginners at one stage or another....we do insist on photos though...lots of them :lol:

Thanks for the reply,

could be just 1 from the 1st supplier ( cream legbar)& 3 from the other ( hybrids), I was worried that it could end up being picked on if I separated them for the journey, also they should be about the same age if everything goes to plan..

They will all be new to their new home, so in that respect it will be easier than trying to introduce new hens to an established flock.

There will be a pecking order dispute to begin with. Even with my first two Omlet girls there was. But I'm sure they will settle down quite happily after a few days.

Good luck and do post pics. :D

As long as they have plenty of room once they are at home they should sort out the pecking order fairly quickly as they will all be newbies...maybe you'd be better with 2 CLB from one supplier to add to the 3 hybrids, then at least you wouldn't have a single to add to the 3......or maybe I'm just encouraging you to become as obsessed as me before you are ready!!!

The three hybrids are unlikely to have been kept just as a trio so will be a new 'flock' anyway and although may 'know' each other they will have had other chickens to dilute the peking order so I don't see a problem with your plan, its not like you are putting one in with an established flock

Two chickens fit in one cat carrier or crisp box so put two hybrids in one and the other hybrid and the legbar together in the other box, that way the smells will get a bit mixed up which might help too
