Tonsilitis question

Recommended Posts

My DD has had tonsilitis for nearly a week now. She started some antibiotics on Monday and she is no better, in fact her throat is much more painful and she has lost her appetite. I keep trying to tempt her with yummy food and drink that she is totally unable to taste.

Yesterday I took her to an NHS walk in clinic in the evening as she said that it was increasingly difficult to breathe and her tonsils bled a little bit. The doctor confirmed tonsilitis and told her to give the antibiotics a chance to work (they seem to have made no difference at all). He also sugested that she goes for a glandular fever test with her GP.

Has anyone else experienced very very painful tonsilitus recently? If so, any tips to speed recovery that don't include iced drinks and endless re runs of Torchwood and Dr Who?!

She may need different antibiotics if its not got any better, shame they havent swabbed her..is she a teenager?(Re Glandular Fever tends to be more common in teenagers)

Hope she is feeling better she could try Chlorasceptic is really good you can buy it in a spray form to help ease throat discomfort

i'm surprised the antibiotics haven't kicked in yet , my son has been getting it for few years now and the glands in his stomach come up to and he gets sick and hos throat gets very closed up. but when he starts taking anti-b's he feels much better 24hrs later, personally i'd go back to docs for different maybe stronger ones.

I agree, antibiotics usually have a noticeable effect in far less than a week. I would be concerned that the bacteria infecting her throat are not susceptible to the antibiotics she has been given, in which case she needs something different. Some ABs have unwelcome side effects which is why GPs always go for the mildest first, but if this infection isn't responding then they need to be changed.

Ask them to swab her throat and check what the infection is, as well as explaining how the infection hasn't responded to the first prescription, and be firm - a week is a long time to feel as poorly as she does.

I hope you get it sorted for her, there's only so much Doctor Who a mother can put up with!

I agree with everyone else, you need to take her back to the docs for some different antibiotics. She shouldn't still be suffering after a week. We all suffer with tonsilitis in this house, DD had quincy once as well, very scarey.

Hope she feels better soon.

Most antibiotics reach a plateau at 48hours but obviously due to resistance etc their is a relcutance, glad you got them changed and she must be so run down.Chlorasceptic is really good for sore throats (spray).

Good luck hope she feels better indie :)

I always find that gargling with a few drops of tea tree oil in a small amount of water helps. I'm mean and make my DD's do it at least once every hour. Infact, if they gargle with this at the first sign of a sore throat they usually avoid tonsilitis. Hope she's soon feeling better.

Hello :)

Unfortunately, i have tonsilitous (my spelling is awful today) once every year or so and it really hurts!

I find that eating a hanful of white grapes speeds up recovery funnily enough.

Also, just eat liquids because swallowing solids is near impossible!

Hope this helps, id definetly recommend the grapes though.

Thanks for your advice everyone. DD is STILL poorley. She has seen 2 GPs and 2 out of hours doctors and is now on her 3rd lot of antibiotics. This is about day 10 and she hasn't left the house and is getting very very bored. We are off to the Isle of Wight on Friday so I hope she is better by then.

Well the 3rd antibiotic worked - the erythromycin. BUT........ it turns out the DD is rather allergic to it and has come out in an all over body rash, including the palms of her hands.

She is now on her 2nd lot of antihistamine to help calm it down.

We are off to the Isle of Wight tomorrow and DD is so covered in bumpy red spots that she says she is going to have a rotten holiday. She won't wear short sleeves or shorts or go swimming with the 3 friends we are taking with us.

The very very good news is that it is NOT glandular fever and she can breathe properly and taste again.

I do feel sorry for her. She has spent 2 weeks of her summer holiday poorly and bored.

Hopefully things will get better from now on.

Is anyone else allergic to erythromycin?

Oh bless her, poor thing. I hope once you're actually there that she enjoys it. :D

My ES is allergic to one of the antibiotics and just throws it up, can't remember which one, and DD is allergic to morphine. When she had her tonsils out they gave it to her and she swelled up and had an allergic rash all over her. Quite scary.
