Out of date food....

Recommended Posts

*donning my QA Managers hat*

Fridges and Freezers slow bacterial growth, or cause them to hibernate (so to speak) it rarely kills them. So, if either of these are not working properly, or get left open, its possible for them to start to mulitply to dangerous levels. Its why you should defrost things in the fridge, not on the side in the kitchen.

OMG am I still alive :?:

I defrost stuff anywhere but the fridge. ......... microwave is good

How many people in the UK die from incorrect interpretation of food labels :?:

 dont panic too much. As long as the levels are low enough and you cook it properly they should not multiply to dangerous levels. As long as you get your meat etc from a reputable supplier and store it correctly it shouldn't be too high a risk (though be aware it is still a risk). Also if you have been doing it this way forever, you will have a higer tolerance, as long as you are fit and well, than others (especially me as I am a bit intense about food safety because of my experiences), DH would be immune to anything because of the stuff he will happily eat

The problem with food safety is that the rules and regs are intended to ensure that everyone is safe which means that they have to be really secure and tight. The young, eldery and unwell are all more susceptible to the organisms that cause food poisoning.

As for how many die, I don't know, but food poisoning is a very common occurance.

I tend not to defrost in the fridge either, nothing ever defrosts in time in the fridge. I expected to feel ill today as we ate chorizo sausage, cooked, for tea yesterday that was a month past it's use by date. Normally we wouldn't do that but we felt it was daft as it was a cured product and we were cooking it so we risked it. Feeling fine so far.........

Having had food poisoning from out of date food that was so severe that I was almost hospitalized , I never, never ever, eat anything past its sell by now, nor would I let my children.

I am a big planner, & I know the date of almost everything in the house. Do still find the odd suprise pack of something that should have been eaten in the '90s though!

Hubby does, but its up to him. He knows I won't be clearing up after him if it all goes pear shaped
