Can I say "Hello" please

Recommended Posts

I am going to the auction too, I went last month and tomorrow, I will take my daughter and grandson, they will love to see the vaiety of chickens available. I dont take deliver of my cube until 25th September so I wont be buying, just looking.

I looked at puting down a base for my run but decided the slabs were too heavy for me to maipulate, I had a brainwave, (I hope). I decided to put down some thick rubber so I can move the cube and run and clean it well when I change the woodchip, I intend to power wash and disinfect. I found some at a company who make lots of rubber componants including sheeting for hovercraft skirts. I told them what I wanted and chose an offcut that was bigger and longer than the cub with its run extention. They cut it to size for me and put it in the back of the car. Its quite heavy and I hope it will do the job. Best of all, it was free!

I am looking forward to being able to bring some chickens home. I think I will start with 3 or 4 Hybrids and go from there. I will keep you posted!

Thank you for the warm welcome

Hellooooo Felonie

I used to be quite sane before I had chickens, quiet & reserved hmmmm now I overflow with enthusiasm, ramble about the most ludicrous joys .. .chickens . . wasn't even like that with our first born :)

The rubber idea you mentioned, funnily enough I came up with a similar idea. I used a kind of tarpaulin .. ahem ahem . . for all the reasons you stated, hosing down, easy to clean etc

Hope yours works better than mine did .. it was great until the first day we had very heavy rain .. . hmmm cube was moved onto pavement slabs as giving lawn a break. Their poor little runs filled up with watre & its just looked like a lake of floating poos bark etc worse we then had to go & dismantle everything in that horrendous torrential rain.. chickens happy sheltering - us - DRENCHED & tarpaulin abandoned - strewn over lawn whilst original place & position were quickly reinstated. Worms were favourable to pooh pool. However, maybe yours will work much better as I didn't even try to figure out why or how I just reverted to cube on lawn with aubiose/hemcore!!!

Thanks for that, my intention is to raise it slightly down the centre to allow the rain to drain off, the rubber is very heavy, it is the sort of thing that is put down on warehouse floors for fork lifts to drive on. Its at least a quarter of an inch thick and solid. If that does not work, I may have to drill a few holes in it for drainage. I also have a cattery unit so it could well be that the chickens swop place with the cats! :P
