Alis girls
did greengage jam last night and plum 2 nights ago. How long should you leave it before you eat? Doesnt say in my book.
Lesley
Eat it straight away!!!!
The Dogmother
'Leave it'? I agree with Lesley - warm, homemade bread with thick helping of butter and loads of your own jam - nothing like it! I went hedge-witching yesterday evening - loads of blackberries, elderberries and... early surprise... ripe sloes! There were so many, and some crab apples too, that I am going to have to go back in stages; I just won't have the time to make it all up otherwise! Now I'm going to make chutney Pleasure I need to make some Onion Marmalade soon aswell as we have run out. Although I am putting loads of jars away for Christmas hampers. We need a hampers thread, as so much produce is good now which is perfect for hampers. I'm going to start one.

Barkisland
I made around 20lbs of Damson jam yesterday, and oh my! it's gorgeous I had to empty my cupboards of last year's produce, and took it to work to give away in order to make way for this year's jam fest. I have made Blackcurrant, Greengage, Gooseberry, yesterday's Damson, plus Plum chutney to stash away. I still have plums ripening, and loads of lovely shiny red crab apples to harvest. I love this time of year!
Ygerna
I have made Blackcurrant, Greengage, Gooseberry, yesterday's Damson, plus Plum chutney to stash away. I still have plums ripening, and loads of lovely shiny red crab apples to harvest. I love this time of year! I think that this is probably the first time, in my life , that I really appreciate the whole autumn harvest thing. Up until now its just been a season prior to winter. I think I am getting far more out of it, and not just jam , than I've ever done before. It will certainly make the Harvest Festival at Church have a deeper meaning for me. The Dogmother
I have crab apples stacked up in bags around the house trying hard to find the time to make something with them. Loads of jam and jelly made already and more to come... I also have great big kilner jars of blackberry vodka and sloe gin; I need to buy more jars for the raspberry voddy. All cooking nicely and I'm turning it every day.
Old Speckled Hen
I also have great big kilner jars of blackberry vodka and sloe gin; I need to buy more jars for the raspberry voddy. All cooking nicely and I'm turning it every day. Every day? I've made a sweetie jar (remember those?) full of damson gin and I'm in the utility room four or five times a day turning it and admiring the colour. Sloes up here are not quite ready, maybe another week. Can't wait
The Dogmother
It's part on my morning routine - labour of love as I don't drink, but The Boy loves it and it makes good Christmas pressies. Want me to send you some sloes? There's a lovely place here that not many people know about - the hedgerows are so abundant it's almost comical. Old Speckled Hen
Hedgerows here are groaning with sloes ... making up for last year but thanks for the offer. I remember last year they were £10 per lb on eBay
