Chucky1
Hi everyone. Please take pity on a newbie. We have managed six hybrids for the last 6 months or so with a regular 5 or 6 eggs a day. We decided to add a further 8 chickens to the flock and this has resulted in some pecking and mugging by the older gals. We have dealt with this by giving the perpetraor a cuddle each time, and it seems to have worked. However I noticed tonight that one of the older gals has a bit of a rattle in her chest and a bit of a cough. She seems otherwise OK and is still eating and drinking and doing chicken type stuff. What is it and what should we do?
Christian
Any rattle when they breathe would indicate a chest infection and I would recommend a visit to the vet. A quick course of antibiotics should clear it up. Hope she is better soon.

Chucky1
Thanks for getting back so quickly. I'll let you know how she gets on. Fingers crossed. Update. Well as of 5 minutes (17:05, 21/8) ago this seems to have cured itself no rattles from any chicken and no one coughing, everyone laying. We're great though the chickens may be a bit fed up of being picked up and having an ear put to their chest for a minute or so. Thanks for the tips
