Tia still laying softies

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure what to do, Tia was put on a 10 day course of baytril at the beginning of july and we had two normal eggs which we had to throw away :( but only softies since then. she's happy and healthy so i'm not worried about her too much but she lays a softie every day. i put limestone powder in their mash and they have access to grit, i also put the ground up eggshells in too. they are on flubenvet at the moment and i'm hoping she'll start laying properly again. if she doesn't lay hard shelled eggs again will it harm her :?:

she's about 7 months old , she'd only been laying a couple of weeks when she got an infection :( her eggs were beautiful, big and lovely hard shells. i don't mind if she doesn't lay again as we love her as a pet but i wasn't sure if it was good for her to keep laying softies.

Mine had a spell of laying softies when they were young often layed on the bars or in the garden) and I found out that it was directly related to how many kitchen s"Ooops, word censored!"s they were having. If they were on pellets or mash they were fine but as soon as a bowl of s"Ooops, word censored!"s was included the softies appeared. I now only give s"Ooops, word censored!"s and treats in small amounts. Softies can be uncomfortable to lay and they can get quite poorly before they are passed.

we think she laid a 50g !eggbrown! yesterday but her eggs are quite similar to scarlets so we're going to see if we start getting 4 eggs a day. they've just finished a course of flubenvet and i gave them some cod liver oil the other night so i'm hoping that may have helped. fingers crossed

Minnie's been laying softies for a while now - she's still only young so I'm hoping she's just settling. She laid a few enormous, double yolker ones to begin with and then has been laying softies for about three weeks now. I've added grit to their feed and am just about to try Davinova in their water. They don't get that many treats and quite a lot of the time they've been in their run so haven't been free ranging and so have only had access to the layers pellets. The eggs are getting slightly harder but are still very fragile. Dixie, who's the same breed, has the same lifestyle etc doesn't have any problems at all so I guess it's just a Minnie thing!

We have 7 chickens and one of them regularly lays softies - her eggs were never brilliant right from the start, they had sort of mini barnacles on the pointy end. She then started laying softies and has been laying them for months now. We get the occasional proper egg from her but the shell is really thin and the egg inside is not always perfect (the yolk runs into a very watery white)

We have come to the conclusion that she is just not very good at laying eggs - it felt like a problem when we only had 4 chickens but now we have 7 we dont mind as it is minimal cost to feed an extra chicken.

We tried all of the usual things, limestone flour, no treats, cod liver oil, worming but all to no avail.

She is just a chicken who can't lay eggs but is otherwise healthy and happy (I assume)
