Pecked to death

Recommended Posts

Just terrible. :(:(:(

We have had our chickens for 2 weeks and the pecking order problems from the first week calmed down and we were left with one chook which would take the odd feather from any other bird which was passing but other than that everything seemed to have calmed down and order established.

When the kids returned from their first day back at school and noticed their were only 3 chooks in the run they went to the nest box to find Babs the lowest order chook was almost dead and a large peck wound on her lower back, she died 10 mins later. The kids couldn't stop crying.

What can trigger this type of attack and could the next lowest chicken now be attacked.

I have bumpers but didn't use them as all seemed fine.

:(:(:(:(

I am very sorry to hear that :( i havent heard of many 'pecked to death' incidents before, so maybe there could have been other factors??

I would separate the bully for a while and see how the others get on, or try the bumpers. Also, there is a spray you can buy from the omlet shop which stops chickens from pecking eachother due to its harmless yet horrid taste.

Hi I am sure one of the regulars on the forum had their little chicken pecked to death or near death, maybe she was sick and they could sense it, especially if they had been getting on before. How horrible for your wee girl, for you and the children. You will have to watch them to see what happens next, if all seems well it may be she was ill
