Abbey Road Girl
Having had my lovely girls since April of last year, I find myself bemused that there have only been a very few poos in the nesting box--maybe one or two per hen for all that time. The common understanding is that hens poo at will wherever they are, so I am quite amazed at finding the nesting box so clean. Is this a weird experience or a more common one? Olly
Weird! Afraid mine poo anywhere, and as they sleep in the nesting-box it gets a fair share of the poo. If your hens don't sleep there, though, you would get less as they tend not to poo and lay an egg at the same time (for technical reasons!). JanTheDiver
I have to clean out the nest box daily as they all sleep in there and it has a lot of poo by the morning.
beulah59
I have two that sleep in the nest box, one that sleeps in a corner and I'm not really sure about the fourth ... but I have three distinct piles of poo to clear each morning ... makes it an easy job! Chook n Boo Mum
No not fastidious at all, though once they are asleep I think they tend to stay where they are, hence the distinct piles...........most of my distinct piles are always in the nestbox and it always surprises me how much there is in there given how much they poo all day ...at least it shows they are eating plenty I suppose I have 3 batties who sleep in their nestbox and at least 2 of my hybrids in , which I think is a "keep away from Willow" ploy rather than the need to sleep snuggled up Sha x
Raina
My girls poo in the nesting box & the tray, i finnally got them to stop sleeping the the nesting box but now they sometimes perch on the ledge of the NB and i wake up to big piles of poop
Gelbel
I have to clean out the nest box daily as they all sleep in there and it has a lot of poo by the morning. Snap - got it down to a fine art and can do it in under 3 mins. I am always amazed by the amount they produce overnight given they seem to poop all day too! Chucky Mama
Mine don't poo in the nesting box and seem to hold their morning poo in until they are let out
veggiemad
Hi. Mine seem to have no concept on how much or where they should poo- its everywhere. Only had them 10 days and have already had to completely pull apart eglu 3 times and clean nesting box and bars everyday in soapy water! Not having many eggs either to reward my hard work!! Plum
When they slept there last winter they pood there but now when they lay there they remove any soiled litter, which is very rare now.
Minky
The only place my girl really really try to make an effort to poo is the kitchen floor straight after it's been cleaned. I can have the patio doors open all day long and nothing, as soon as I get the mop out all they wanna do is come in for a plop
jkl
The only place my girl really really try to make an effort to poo is the kitchen floor straight after it's been cleaned.: Know that feeling all to well........ ( don't tell she whom rules though...) as Mo comes into the kitchen looking for grapes and then makes her feelings known when she doesn't get any! cheers
dippy bird
Mine are happy to poo anywhere and everywhere! I think their favourite place is also on my kitchen floor right after I have mopped it, and Margaret has even been known to poo on my sofa! Good job I love em! BTW my new girls Maud and Aggie are doing well, they are free ranging with the others, although keeping their distance, but so far so good, not a great deal of pecking going on and they are all sleeping together in total harmony.
