They are so cute...1 silver black and the other is a lovely cream white colour. Griffin Posted September 12, 2009 Share Posted September 12, 2009 I bought two Silkie chicks a few weeks ago as day olds and the breeder claimed to have a good success rate of sexing them at that age. After a few days it gets more difficult. She looks at their head shape, from the side. Girls have a higher hairdo on the backs of their heads than boys. She thought the two she sold me were probably girls. They're about six weeks now and so far I think she might be right! I recently sexed a Silkie boy at four weeks due to his comb so I'm really really hoping she's got it right with these two. I've used the same technique on my Poland chicks, some were easier than others but we'll see over the coming weeks if I was right or not. I was also thinking about maybe cutting an apple in half and sticking it in there. would they enjy pecking at tht? or is tht a bad idea? Bought 6 eggs off of ebay and only 3 have hatched ...I did candle them...can anyone tell me what they mean...its 2 days overdue...one egg i culdnt see nothing but an air pocket and the rest shone no light but the other eggs i could see they lit up and glowed when the light was on them...does it mean they are empty? Redwing Posted September 13, 2009 Share Posted September 13, 2009 If you are gettng eggs now bear in mind that the recent chicks will still be under heat when the new ones hatch so you will need a plan regarding heat lamps etc.. Then when they are older they will need separate houses as they cant be mixed with such an age gap until they are grown up I have had 6 lots of chicks this year (either bought or hatched) and they live in 7 different houses and runs/brooders so you need to have a proper plan as those tiny chicks grow up and need lots more room and its easy to forget that! Egg fertility may well be lower at this time of year so if you want 6 chicks I would buy 10 or 12 eggs Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
