chickens not laying

Recommended Posts

Helloooo!

My sil bought 4 girlies about two weeks ago, 2 are warrens and 2 are red stars. She was told that the warrens are already laying and yet they haven't laid any eggs since she got them. She doesn't know how old they are either. Do you think they have stopped because they have been moved and are also now with two other girls who are only about 14 weeks old and just need more time to settle in? Is it possible that they are at an age where they have stopped laying altogether and she has been diddled? I did tell her to phone the guy and ask how old they were. Any ideas folks??

It is possible that she has been fobbed off with two older birds. Have you had a chance to have a look at them?

On the other hand it could just be the upheaval of moving and being put in with the younger hens.

No chance of an egg eater among them? Or laying where they shouldn't such as under a bush?

What is she feeding them on?

I have seen them and they look healthy to me (I am new to this myself), their combs are red. They are in a run (pretty big), so not likely to be laying under any bushes, although they have managed to jump out of their run a few times! I think she has them on layers pellets. I am hoping it is just down to the upheaval, but I remember her saying that she had met this guy at a market in chelford and he had said that he had about 200 birds that he wanted to get rid of, which has got me thinking that maybe they are older and not laying so are no use to him? Plus he only charged £3 for them which to me is pretty cheap. Is there an age when they do stop laying?

It does sound a bit suspect :?

Have they been wormed?

Are the older birds much bigger than the younger ones, because they do grow quite a bit in their first year.

They can have upto a couple of weeks off if there is an upheaval.

It does seem to be a bit of an odd season for laying at the moment. My older girls have gone on strike this week and my younger ones are taking a long time to get going.

Yes, they are huge compared to the babies, they seem to be eating well.My girlies are being irregular with laying at the mo as well, and my two new ones haven't laid yet, although they are only about 19 weeks old, so not really expecting anything from them just yet. As far as I know, my SIL's girls have had all the meds that they should have done (I made sure she asked before buying them). I might nip over and have a look at them later on (not that I know what I'm doing. lol)
