Ygerna
I was down in Somerset for the weekend, and on Saturday we all went blackberry and sloe gathering. Top day for it, glorious weather, sunny and warm. So, I am getting my sloes ready for the gin, I've been googling a recipe (as you do) but wondered what your favourite recipe is on here? I did do a search but, got lots of hits but no recipe TIA
The Dogmother
I don't really have a recipe, just bung sloes in a kilner jar to about athird full, pour some sugar in on top, then add the gin. Shake it daily for the first month, then weekly until about 3 months is up, the sieve off the sloes and strain it through a coffee filter paper. ClaireG
I just do what my Dad has always done!! Prick the sloes with a fork, layer them up in a large container (eg kilner jar) sprinkling caster sugar between each layer until you reach the top of the jar. Then pour over the gin. Shake the container every day for a couple of weeks. Leave for as long as possible but at least 3 months. Strain and decant into bottles then drink! The Dogmother
Every year, I use the raspberries out of the raspberry voddy to go in the centre of a delicious pavlova for dessert at Christmas lunch
Cinnamon
I remember once posting a recipe for a sloe gin chocolate thing, that used up the gin sloes - will try to do a search. BeckyBoo
I'm the same as Claret, but don't forget they're apparently better after a night in the freezer - sweetens them up! Then 18 months later, if any are still whole dip them in melted chocolate and eat - just don't plan anything for the 24 hours after that!! The Dogmother
I'm the same as Claret, but don't forget they're apparently better after a night in the freezer Thanks for reminding me Becky - you're supposed to pick them after the first frost so that they get bletted (softened) by the cold, but they've usually all gone if you leave them that long. I pick mine as soon as they are ripe and freeze them first as Becky recommends
chickencam
Oh picked some today that were really squidgy and we have made loads, went to the supermarket and came out with 3 bottles of gin and some sugar I wonder what they thought . The sugar was for marrow rum. I now have a strange thing hanging in tights from my kitchen curtain rail and my OH is strangely excited
Ygerna
I froze mine over night too, and they indeed did go squidgy. I may have been a little over excited when harvesting them though. I've made a HUGE batch AND given the rest of the sloes left over to a neighbour
